JNR 201 Series / 国鉄201系

The 201 Series (201系) is a DC commuter EMU manufactured by JNR.

Manufactured from 1979 to 1985, the 201 series was the first JNR train to adopt the armature chopper control method. Compared to the 103 series, significant energy savings were achieved with the installation of regenerative braking, and the type was considered to be the most advanced commuter train in Japan for some time. Although high manufacturing costs of chopper controllers became an issue as JNR's financial situation deteriorated, and in 1985 it was decided that the cheaper 205 series would be produced instead. The total number of vehicles stood at 1018 cars, of which 794 cars were inherited by JR East and 224 by JR West. The 201 series saw extensive use in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area, although all sets were withdrawal by 2011. In Kansai, the type was placed on local services on the Tōkaidō-San'yo line system, but diverted to the Osaka Loop Line after the 321 series entered service. It was used to replace the 103 series on the Kansai Main Line (Yamatoji Line) and also saw service on the Osaka Higashi Line from 2008 to 2022. As of current, there are just 66 cars still registered with JR West, all arranged in 6 car sets. All remaining services are on the Kansai Main Line, and they are scheduled to be withdrawn in FY 2024 with the 221 series being transferred from other areas to replace them.
