There is a notorious error in the game that can prevent you from playing Forza Horizon 5. Your steam cloud will not sync and the game will not be able to load any of your backups. I have recently encountered it and found a fix. This error can have multiple error codes, for me it was E:45-b.

To fix the issue, just follow the steps below:

1. Open your XBOX app and navigate to your profile settings
2. unlink your steam account





3. open forza
4. after opening the game you will be prompted to link your steam and xbox accounts again
5. ignore this popup. Click the X in the top right corner and go back to the game
6. you will now be able to see the option to sign out again








7. Sign out, the game will restart
8. when prompted to sign in, sign in with a different xbox account and link it to your steam
9. Start the game and play a little. (i finished the tutorial)
10. Exit to desktop and restart the game
11. Sign out of your burner account, the game will restart
12. Log back into your main account, link to steam and press continue

you can now play on your main account again, with your old progress and steam will properly sync again as well
