Sandworms are gigantic creatures that live and hunt in the sand sea of the planet Arrakis. While they are seen as formidable beasts due to their enormous sizes and territorial behavior, brave individuals from all factions actively seek and hunt down sandworms, as they the only known source of the spice melange, which is essential to interstellar travel. Sandworms can detect the rhythmic movement of normal walking, and in response, the desert-dwellers develop the sandwalking technique that will not create a rhythm.
