This guide contains every element choice and their associated stat increases, starting skills, and full skill list.

Just use the guide index tab on the right to find the info you want to skip the guide's few intro sections.

They're not necessary to read but contains important information if you're new to Wooden Ocean.

If you're going to read any part of this guide, I'd say at least read the "Element Selection Menu" at the very least in its entirety, as all of that is fairly important to know about.

Element Selection Menu
Here's a visual for the element selection menu you'll be presented with when starting a new game.

[Update 7/19/25] This is the current visual for the elements. There may be more elements added in the future.

These are where the elements are located relative to one another and stat increases you receive from each element. Note that you start out on philistine when first seeing the list.

Your stat increases only apply to the specific party member. I thought it applied to your entire party but was wrong. There are likely some potentially ridiculously strong builds that could be made just from knowing this fact alone.

You also begin with Prepare spells; these are super powerful skills that you begin with at no cost--you should look under the "Element Choices & Stat Increases" Sections to see what they are/do since there's too many to list here.
Guide Purpose
Purpose
I made this guide because when deciding on builds to make for new runs I would forget which stat increase belonged to which element. I've spent more time than I'm willing to admit on the element selection screen.

Out of desire to find a wiki-like sort of reference I decided to make one for myself and others. The main goal of this guide save some time for both new and returning players by laying out all the info on element skills in one (mostly) comprehensive guide. I do not consider any of the following spoilers, as you get access to all this information within seconds of starting a new game.
Basic Info on Elements & Skills
Element choices and their stat increases are permanent. There are no exceptions to this rule, so choose wisely!

Element skills are always accessible in every combat encounter for the duration of the game.

You start out with 50 AP and gain 1 AP for every level earned.

You use AP to learn skills from the "Learn" menu.

Unlike weapon skills, element skills are not locked behind an upgrade path/tree. This means any skill in each list is learnable so long as you have the right amount of AP for it and the element chosen.

Elements cater towards different play styles (which I might expand on in this guide at a later time), and each element has a small chance to afflict a status depending on its type.

AP - Stands for Action Points and is used in learning element (and weapon) skills, ST - stands for Stamina, MP - for Mana, and HP for Health. Again, Consult the Official User Manual Guide for more details

How Should I Use This Guide?
If you are new to the game, I would look at the “Elements Selection Menu” and choose what sounds interesting to you. If you’re new to the game and not playing a super hard difficulty anything can work, so just choose anything you think would be fun!

Anyways, if you’re a returning player, this guide is a lot less about discovering what’s available in the toolbox of skills that the game offers than it is acting as a general reference to help with in-game routing and general planning for harder modes.

For both cases, when you decide on an element you should press [CTRL] + [F] to find the element you would like to use and browse through their skill list to see what excites you.

I could go on about what are good synergies and whatnot but my goal is to give you the tools to paint on the canvas that is this game’s combat & element system.

I’ll probably update this section to include a section for Infinite Nightmare and the easier difficulties since that might be worth explaining but I think I’ll do that another time.

Otherwise known as how I've decided to format & denote skills:

I use the following notation generally speaking (I make slight modifications when applicable).

Sometimes though, there will be a Healing / Mana Restore calculations in place of damage calculations. You'll know how they look when you see them.

I will be updating this guide to include skill cooldowns, visuals icons to make this guide a bit more visually pleasant. I would consider this guide fairly complete, but if I missed some stuff just let me know in the comments below!
Element Choices & Stat Increases Intro
The following is a collection of each element's associated stat increases (and two unmentioned free skills) you receive when prompted to choose an element at the start of a new game. Steam didn't like how long the list was so it's been broken into parts by rows.

The visual above covers this part, but I thought it was still important to include since visuals I made trying to include the skills you gain on the Visual started to look really cluttered. I also thought a text version of the element stat increases couldn't hurt to include.

You can determine how each elements damage is calculated by their first skill. For instance, Carbon's damage is generally determined by Player's Magic - Enemy Defense, Lightning's is determined by Player's Magic - Enemy Magic & Spirit, and so on.

I forego including the "Player's" part in damage calculations because the game does the same. Just know that if it doesn't have the noun "Enemy" then it's referring to your specified stat.

As a reminder, use [CTRL] + [F] and type in with the "": "Element of " and then element you want view.

  • Low to moderate chance to stagger, knockdown, and flinch.
  • Moderately increase environmental clutter.

  • Moderately decreases environmental clutter.

Skill List Intro
Here is every skill for each element!

Here are two important abbreviations to know for some skills.

DoT stands for "Damage over Time", and HoT stands for "Heal over Time."

I'll categorize what each chunk in an element's ability list is intended to do i.e., healing/status affliction, but for now it's mostly self-explanatory since every four skills introduces a new skill type and follows with stronger variants of that new type. Hope this helps!

I'd say go on normal and pick what sounds good

Hard or Nightmare if you want a real challenge--if you do consider having psychic as one of your elements

Otherwise, it helps to think of synergies in the context of the weapon you're using as well. For example, Gravity + Great Sword for Knockdown --> the Execute Skill purchased after Violent Swing for silly amounts of damage
