Starfield: True Clean Vanilla Reinstall🛠️
由 Vlad 254 發表
Game won't launch or Crashes? Unmodded game suddenly won't run, or run properly? Last modding session went belly up? Here are the steps to return your game to it's original runable state.

This guide is for those who for whatever reason can not successfully launch or play their game after trying everything else like for example verifying the integrity of the game files, uninstalling and reinstalling the game as you normally would. Also for those who modded Starfield and are having the same issues after trying everything else and a simple uninstall/reinstall won't work for them.

You also can use this (I do) before each starting new modded load order. This way your game is in the exact same (or better) state it was the very first time you installed it on your computer.

You'll also find a section for doing the same to Vortex if you use it for your mod manager.

Thank you and enjoy!

Return your game to it's true vanilla state

This guide will walk you through the process of performing a true Clean Vanilla Reinstall in order to return your game to it's original vanilla state without any left over hidden files to disrupt the process of launching and playing your game. We'll also make sure your drivers and any files the game requires are installed and up to date.

These steps are often needed should your modded game go belly up, and will often fix whatever issues we are having with our unmodded vanilla game. I also always take these steps in-between load orders performing a clean reinstall before starting the new load order. These same steps have helped many users via my Skyrim SE Clean Reinstall guide.

Sometimes after our game suddenly won't run we try a few "fixes", maybe even many "fixes" including uninstalling and reinstalling the game all to no avail. Hopefully we at least tried all of this. Eventually we are at our wit's end so we decide to give up. In a case like this it's best to return your game to it's original state which a simple uninstall/reinstall will not fix due to lingering files.

Important
A game update in itself is not responsible for "breaking" your game. True you'll need to update the Starfield Script Extender (SFSE) and any mods that depend on SFSE but this is normal. Remember, Bethesda is updating the base game which is all they can do unless everyone in the world had the same load order which is obviously unrealistic. The best practice is to protect your game from updates so that when there is an update from Bethesda you can continue to play your game until SFSE and all the mods in your load order that work with it are updated so that you can then update your load order accordingly. Those steps are in the link below

Some people users never update their games until they are ready to build their next load order.
Reminder
When is the last time you opened your PC and blew out the dust?
How to Clean Your Computer
1. Must Have Files
This section can be done after the clean reinstall if you like or if you know everything is in order you can skip this section however many times the issue is somewhere in here so it's worth checking.

First things first.
Make sure these important files are installed and up to date

*C++ Redist
Install both the x64, and x86 versions of "2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022" file packages.
Follow the link below and make sure they are up to date by clicking "repair.
*Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2022
Then make sure both versions of these essential files installed properly and are up to date - it's that important
you may already them so if prompted to repair choose yes:
Visual C++ Redist[docs.microsoft.com] Remember - take both the x64 and the x86 packages (some mods require x86).

* Make sure you have DirectX 12
DirectX12 comes with Windows 11 so you may have it, this game runs on DirectX 12.
DirectX [support.microsoft.com]
you can also check which version of DirectX you have installed on your pc.
In the search box on the toolbar type:
dxdiag
Then select the dxdiag run command

and check which version you have.

*Make sure your graphic drivers are up to date. if you need help with that see this link:
*How to update your computer Graphic Drivers
or see the section in this guide titled "Update Drivers".

*Make sure your game is using your video card
Nvidia users: right click desktop, open Nvidia Control Panel and make sure your GPU is selected.
AMD users: right click desktop and select AMD Radeon settings/ Gaming menu/ Global settings.

* make sure your Anti-virus or Bitdefender is not blocking your game
Add a rule to Bitdefender: Click "Protection on the navigation menu in the Bitdefender interface/ Click settings in the Firewall module/ Select the Rules tab/ Click Add rule and add Starfield.

Next: Clean Reinstall. see the next section.
2. True Clean Reinstall
Have you checked the above section and made sure your important files are installed and up to date? If so then proceed with the clean reinstall.

IF you were modding your game and IF you were using the Vortex mod manager to do so then sometimes it's also best to remove all files that may be lingering even after you uninstalled all your mods properly. IF that's the case then before you follow the steps listed here go to the Vortex section of this guide and do that first, then return here and follow these steps.

First: Back up your saves folder if you had an unmodded (vanilla) game and want to keep them. Your saves are located here:
C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Documents\My Games\Starfield\Saves
Just remember if your game was modded you won't be able to use your old saves or they will be looking for data that no longer exists.

Do not skip any steps

Carefully Follow these steps:

  1. Delete the "Starfield" folder that's inside your Common folder which is located here:
    \steamapps\common\Starfield
(in my case it's D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common - yours may be different)
(MAKE SURE YOU DELETE the ENTIRE "Starfield" folder)

  2. Also Delete the "Starfield" folder located here:
C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Documents\My Games\Starfield (again JUST the Starfield folder)

  3. (see image below) Push the "Windows Key + R" a run box will popup (see image below)
and then in the box type "appdata" (no quotations) then select "OK" or push "Enter". and you'll see some folders.

  4. Now open the "Local" Folder and delete the "Starfield" Folder.

  5. Now open your Steam Library and uninstall this game ("Starfield")

  6. Reinstall Starfield. Important: Make sure you install Starfield on a quality SSD (preferably outside of Program files especially if you are modding your game).
IMPORTANT FOR MOD USERS (I suggest these steps for unmodded games as well) if you'll be modding your game move your game/library outside of Program Files Moving a Steam Installation [Steam] (see the "Why Move before Modding" section of this guide for more info)

You can now launch and play your game without mods or you can start a new modding session.

~enjoy!

Also, IF you are modding your game and using the Starfield Script Extender (SFSE)
then make sure to protect your game from updates by following these steps

See the next section as related to your Graphics card's driver.
3. Update Drivers
Update your graphics drivers (check if needed):

We mentioned this in a previous section of this guide so if you need more help updating your drivers follow the steps below for either Nvidia or AMD, whichever you have installed on your unit.

*Make sure your drivers are up to date. if you need help with that see this link:
*How to update your computer Graphic Drivers

Also make sure the game is reading your GPU. Sometimes PC's have integrated graphic cards.

Nvidia
For example if you have an Nvidia Graphics Card use the Nvdia Control Panel and select your graphics card. So if the OS does not have a GPU preference for an application, then you can specify the preferred graphics processor to use from the NVIDIA Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > "Preferred graphics processor setting". Yours may show as "OpenGL rendering GPU" instead of "Preferred graphics processor setting". Either way set that to your Nvidia card.

AMD
The following steps can be used to set the AMD video card as the default video option.
Right Click on the desktop.
Click AMD Radeon Settings from the menu.
Click on System (Figure 1). Figure 1.
Click on Switchable Graphics (Figure 2). Figure 2.
Optional: Clean Vortex
Vortex users may want to return it to a clean state
Skip this section if Vortex does not apply to you.

The following steps will ensure all traces of previous mods have been removed from Vortex.

I do this between each new modding session in order to ensure I'm starting fresh.

1. First go to Extensions and disable "Script Extension Error check" setting (if using SFSE)
2. Under "Settings" also untick "Deploy Mods when Enabled.
3. Now "Purge" your mods using the "Purge" button at the top of the Mods section.
4. Also In the "Mods" section click on any mod then "CNTRL+A" and look to the very bottom, you'll now see a new white section of options at the bottom. Use the "Remove" option (has a trash can icon next to it) and also check "Delete Archive", click "OK" and wait while Vortex does its work. When it's finished proceed to the final steps.
5. Now deploy mods - this will remove the plugins
5a. In some cases you may have to repeat step 4 several times and if any refuse to remove then individually right click each one and choose remove and remove related until everything is removed.
6. Go to the plugin section and make sure there are no mod plugins remaining. You'll only be able to disable them here so also go to the folder the files are in and remove them there.
7. Just in case: Did you Go into your Data folder and double check for plugins that are not part of the base game? Not sure what those might be as it depends what you have installed. Google is your friend here.
7a. Repeat Steps 3 & 4 if there are any mods remaining in the "Mods" section of Vortex
8. Now turn the settings we turned off in steps 1 and 2 earlier;
+"Script Extension Error check"
+Under "Settings" also untick "Deploy Mods when Enabled.
4. Cloud (and Auto) Saves
A few optional tips as a precaution:
  1. OneDrive can and often does cause issues with your save. Best bet is to turn OneDrive off.
  2. Ideally Steam's cloud saves should be off as well.
  3. Finally, turning off "Auto save on Travel".

Most important are #1 & #2.

Did this guide help you? Don't forget to leave a like and favorite so the guide doesn't get buried down low in the guide section on Steam so that instead others can easily find it.
Why move before modding?
Why move your game outside of Program Files?
When Starfield (or any game) is installed in either of the programs files Windows sometimes interferes due to UAC[docs.microsoft.com] permissions. Microsoft wants to control these folders which never bothers us until we try to mod a game installed in these folders. While not everyone will incur problems with their game installed in Program files right away the best thing is to avoid any potential problems by simply installing your game & Steam in a different location.

UNRESTRICTED ACCESS (Moving Your Game Out of Program Files)
Please uninstall SSE then re-install your game to either another drive or if that is not an option keep it in C: but NOT in Program Files or Program Files (x86) which is where Steam tries to install it. Note: installing on an EXTERNAL DRIVE you MAY encounter sound issues. Key word here is "may". You may not have sound issues and to the best of my knowledge this only seems to be a problem for some.

To Move to a separate drive (example: D) SEE Below:
Navigate to your Steam client 'Settings' menu. Select 'Steam Library Folders' from the 'Downloads' tab. From here, you can view your default installation path, as well as creating a new path by selecting 'Add Library Folder'. Once you have created the new path, all future installations can be installed there. (see link below for more on this)
Here's the link:
Steam's full instructions

But I only have a C: drive:
Again, if this is absolutely not an option for you because you only have 1 drive, simply move Steam but NOT in either of the "Program Files".
