Controls & Interface
Controls
🔽 When looting items with E, simply press E again to loot all.

🔽 Shift-left-click to pick up part of a stack.

🔽 Alt-left click to move a whole stack in or out of a container

🔽 Use your mousewheel and scroll out! You can see quite far around Hank when looking for harvestables if you adjust your view.

🔽 There are keybinds for most of the buttons on the bottom bar (see Settings, Controls). B to enter Build Mode and B again to exit is super useful.

Map
🌎 As you walk around, keep an eye on your minimap (or periodically bring up the full map with M). It's much easier to spot items this way. Some spawn behind scenery and are difficult to spot otherwise.

🌎 If you're looking for map-based fast travel, you're not going to find it. You have to go to a bus stop, once you unlock two or more.

Inventory
🎒 You can delete unwanted items by dropping them on the small trash icon at the top-right of your inventory. See picture below - it's a bit hard to see if you're not looking for it. The last item thrown away stays there and can be taken back out.

🎒 Just to the left of the trash can is an 'organize' button that will stack like items and shift everything toward the top.

🎒 Double-click on a filter category in your inventory and you will be presented with subcategories. This is very useful for finding your cooked meals, etc.

Interface
⏳ Time is paused while in build mode, but not while in your inventory, scheduling guests, etc. in adventure mode.

⏳ If you don't want to watch the progress bar to finish, you can close out of the recycling machine or cooking interface and it will continue running.

⏳ To see how much money you are making, look at your reviews.
Building
🏠 You can design your layout without having the 'required' furniture for each room. As long as the checkmark on the right end of the create-a-room bar is green ✅, you can create the room. Invalid door or window placement will cause the checkmark to become grayed out. You will have to place the furniture before the room will be functional for guests, though.

🏠 Clicking on the door on the bar at the top unfortunately does not help you put in a door. You have to open your inventory and use the door icon with a green plus sign at the top. Doors and windows are free and are not actual inventory items.

🏠 If you delete a room, all the furniture inside will automatically go into your inventory. If your inventory is fills up, the excess will be available from a 'Lost and Found' icon to the left of the backpack, but you have to exit build mode before you'll see it.

🏠 Though a hallway must be at least 2 squares wide to place a door at the end, guests can walk down a 1 wide hallway just fine. The doors just need to be along the sides. (And it's a bit of a squeeze for Hank.🐻)

🏠 Special rooms (such as the campfire or lounge) in a resort are available to all guests regardless of which building they're staying in. Each building does need its own dining hall and heat, however. A kitchen is not strictly required.

🏠 You only really need one full kitchen to do all your cooking for the game. Put it somewhere you can spare some room, as as the high-end cooking furniture gets quite large. You may want an extra fridge for storage.
Furniture
🪑 Only the level of functional furniture (beds, wardrobes) determines to the level of the room.

🪑 A level 3 decoration isn't necessarily a better deal than a level 2 one. Compare the decoration score vs. the the price and the space it takes up. Higher level decorations tend to get bigger and bigger, so you may not be improving your decoration per square foot by choosing them.

🪑 Dining tables, campfires, etc. only need 1 chair to function, if you're light on materials.

🪑 Winter-themed decorations are sold at the 'special shop' unlocked in A-24. There are some higher-level decorations there than what will be available from Took at that stage.

🪑 Old 'functional furniture' (made by Hank 🐻) can be recycled, but old decorations (bought with trash) have to be thrown away. -- At least as of writing March 2024, this is a commonly requested feature for updates!
Guests
👨 The "happy" "angry" and "sad" reaction bubbles from guests don't seem very consequential. Think of them as flavor, and don't worry about any effect on your ratings.

👨 Guests aren't bothered about uncollected trash on the property.

👨 You earn much more money by significantly exceeding guests' expectations. Keep that in mind both when furnishing your rooms and assigning your guests.

👨 On the other hand, the missions to "complete x stays" at a property don't require you to get a good rating for those stays. if you feel like you're stuck and can't get your scores up to meet guests' expectations, you can always book them anyway and power through it. You will receive credit and be paid (though a bit less) even if you fail to impress. Your ratings will recover quickly once you get your facilities up to par.
Providing Food
Yourself
🍓 Food gatherables, including the greenhouse and farmhouse garden respawn multiple times per day. Keep that in mind if you're having trouble keeping up with demand.

🍓 Make a point to put the lowest score (or easiest to make) food in the buffet first, especially once you have the larger buffet tables. Guests seem to eat from left to right. If you're good about keeping the first few slots restocked, you won't have to replenish the more difficult and valuable food at all, making it easy to maintain a high food score. Bowls of apples and sliced strawberries are good for this purpose.

🍓 When considering what dishes are cost-effective to make, don't forget to consider the value of the fuel required. Some use as much as 7 fuel apiece, which is a lot early on. Some don't require any.

🍓 While you're playing chef, I suggest you place a small kitchen with fridges near each dining hall to store extra food. You can also place multiple buffets in the dining hall for this purpose, they just take up a lot of space at high levels.

🍓 Then, take advantage of this setup! When you take the time to put together the ingredients for a new recipe, make a lot and store some in each location.

Using Staff
🍲 The cook, (Julia), doesn't require any kitchen furniture besides the cooking stand. You don't even need to place the cutting board that would make the game deem it a valid kitchen.

🍲 Julia charges a flat 200c a day plus 20c per food point provided to the location. Dishes are continually provided and never run out unless the service is switched off. Due to the flat fee, it's slightly more economical to staff resorts with multiple dining halls.

For example, in the mid-game I paid 1400c to have 30 food points in both Winterberry cabins (200c flat + 600 + 600). -- I just avoided booking foodies.

🍲 Julia does not use your ingredients, so you don't have to worry about what goes into each dish anymore. Feel free to choose whatever dishes you feel like for each buffet, as long as the points add up to the food score you're aiming for.

🍲 You can't put your own food in buffets managed by staff. So if you want to continue using some of your own cooking, you'll have to leave some dining halls unmanaged.
Providing Heat
Mechanics
🔥 Boilers/heaters stack. You aren't meant to get by with just one Grandma boiler in the beginning at Winterberry. (Unless you don't care about your reviews!)

🔥 It's not practical to try to keep your rooms exactly at the desired 75° F. Plan your heat system to ensure it is at least 75° F in the coldest part of the night. That will mean it's frequently very hot indoors during the day, but as the in-game tutorial tells you, there is no penalty for this. People love 104° hotel rooms, apparently.

🔥 On Jax's management screen, if you look at heaters he is not managing, it shows the number of hours left until they run out of wood. If you are stocking them yourself, this is very useful for knowing when to come back. You need only to have his panel placed in each zone - not actually have him hired - for the screen to be available.

🔥 All heaters burn 1 wood per hour, or 24 wood per day. You can tell because on Jax's heat management screen, the number of hours left will be equal to the amount of wood you have in each heater. And you can observe that regardless of the level of heater, if you place 100 wood in each and check back later, they will all have the same amount left.

🔥 So the main differences as you upgrade the heaters are:
1- They produce more heat
2- They take up more space
3- Their decoration penalty decreases
4- it costs more to have Jax manage them.

🔥 The fuel chest furniture item doesn't seem that useful. It gives negative decoration score and I've never wanted to put more than one full stack of 999 fuel in each heater anyway.

Using Staff
🧯 You might think if you hire Jax, he'd only put in the needed amount of fuel to maintain 75° F and keep the guests happy. But, no. He just ensures your furnaces count as being stocked 24/7.

🧯 Jax's fee is 400c per day plus 420c per Hightech Heater, 280c per Reliable Heater, and 140c per Ol' Grandma Boiler managed.

🧯 Therefore, if you are buying your fuel from Jax anyway, hiring him is cheaper (and easier!) on a per-zone basis

🧯 For example, Winterberry I pay 1600c per day for both cabins. There's 1 Hightech Heater and 1 Ol' Grandma Boiler in each. This appears to be the minimum necessary to keep the rooms warm in the dead of night. If I were buying the fuel instead, it would cost 20c x 24 hours x 4 heaters = 1920c.

Weather
🌞 In addition to different zones having different climates, there seem to be seasonal weather patterns in the game. I set up my heat in Pinefall when it was in the 50s (F) even at night. But toward the end of my playthrough, it started dropping well below freezing at night. One level 3 heater wasn't enough for each cabin after all. I ended up with the same configuration for Pinefall that I had for Winterberry - one level 1 and one level 3 heater per building.

Other Staff Services
Concierge - Gus - I haven't used him, as the warning that he doesn't match guests to rooms very well put me off. But, you could easily make use of him once all the rooms in a property are so highly rated they are OK for anyone. (Or almost anyone, if you don't care about your rating coming down a bit.)

Sanitation - Wade - He gathers a lot more 'valuables' per day than you would be able to find. Hundreds! Since guests don't seem bothered by the trash they drop not getting picked up, his services are not necessary for automation. He's basically just a great way to convert coin into valuables. He can also get garbage out of those hard-to-reach places, if it drives you crazy.

General Advice
🍏 The days go by fast if you're not spending a lot of time paused while building, etc. If you need more money before you can proceed, just run around collecting and maintaining things for few days. Don't forget to sleep through the nights. If you set up your properties so that you're earning a decent profit, you'll get there in no time.

🍏 If you're getting stressed out by all your chores, especially before you get the pager, don't be afraid to just stop booking guests in some of your properties for a while. There's no penalty for letting your hotel sit empty for a bit, you just won't earn as much money.

🍏 Don't stop looting the wood piles with the dark brown plank (mahogany) or visiting the dump (at least when you're nearby). Already have hundreds of mahogany? It's probably not enough. Don't pass them by until you've made all the highest tier furniture that you want.

🍏 Pick up fuel whenever you can, as well. You'll eventually need so much every day you'll have to buy it, one way or another. It's as close as you can get to looting money.

🍏 If you intend to play through to the end and unlock everything, you're going to need a lot of charcoal lilies. Probably over 300, off the top of my head. Stop by Blackmoss or Darkgrove and pick some periodically to make it less of a grind at the end.
