JR West 283 Series / JR西日本283系

The 283 Series (283系) is an EMU operated by JR West on Limited Express services.

Manufactured in 1996 to serve the popular tourist resorts along the Kii Peninsular, the 283 series "Ocean Arrow" strived to provide a high quality of service and improve the competitiveness of rail. Compared to the previous JNR 381 series, the new type raised the top speed to 130km/h, and curve passing speeds were also drastically improved. Cold-weather and snow resistance was built into the vehicles in anticipation of their future introduction on the Hakubi Line, although this never materialized. The exterior was painted ocean green as much of the route runs alongside the coast. Only 18 cars were produced, divided into 2 6-car sets and 2 3-car additional sets. All vehicles are in service on Limited Express Kuroshio, operating as either 3+3, 6, or 6+3 car consists.
