Basic Information
This is a clumsy process that circumvents the lack of custom portraits in the game.

The ability to edit these files is entirely thanks to the work of the user "Darke" found here that lets us open up the container files and examine the file structure.

Note the following:
  • You will need a program that can edit .dds files.
  • This method can only overwrite and replace existing portraits (probably).
  • You may encounter issues that I don't understand.

Editing
Editing the files is a very simple process if you can find custom portraits that are .png files with background transparency. If they aren't .png with transparent backgrounds, you will end up with colored backgrounds or other messy situations that don't fit in the normal portraits and full-size art.

How to begin:
1. Identify the portraits you used on your character, or want to use on a new character.
2. Match the portraits to the list in the file list section.
3. Create a .dds file with the appropriate attributes.
4. Copy & paste your image into the .dds file.
5. Save the file.
6. Move this .dds to the main Elminage Gothic folder.

Attributes of .dds Files
Edit: Do not use compression on the .dds files unless you experience crashes, it will lower the quality. One of my images was causing crashes without .dds compression.

GR10 File:

- .dds format (paint.net or GIMP)
- RGB colorspace
- BC2 / DXT3 Compression
- No mipmaps
- 192x192 pixels
- Transparency supported

GR11 File:

- .dds format (paint.net or GIMP)
- RGB colorspace
- BC2 / DXT3 Compression
- No mipmaps
- 1088x1088 pixels
- Transparency supported
File Structure
The number beside the portrait is end of the file name.

Example: 201 is the first human portrait in the image.
Usage: 201 ---> GR10_201.dds (the small portrait) / GR11_201.dds (the full body image)

More portraits coming later to the visual guide.

Dwarf Male: 225
Dwarf Female: 231
Gnome Male: 237
Gnome Female: 243
Hobbit Male: 249
Hobbit Female: 255
Fairy Male: 261
Fairy Female: 267
Werebeast Male: 273
Werebeast Female: 279
Dragonewt Male: 285
Dragonewt Female: 291

In the mean time, you can simply find your portrait ID by finding your race in the list and counting up the list (6 per gender per race).
Example: Fairy female portrait 1 is "267".
You can also download the .bra extractor linked in the first section, courtesy of Darke's efforts and view the files directly.
Example of Process
1. Identify your portrait number (such as GR10_246).
2. Prepare a GR10 and GR11 .dds file with the appropriate file attributes using a .dds compatible image editing program.
3. Find a portrait-sized image to copy paste into GR10 .dds file, then save with the correct name (such as GR10_246.dds).
4. Find a full-body-sized image to copy paste into GR11 .dds file, then save with the correct name (such as GR11_246.dds).
5. Copy the two .dds files into the main Elminage Gothic directory.

Thanks for the guide! It actually takes literally seconds if I paste an image into the GR10_203.dds using paint . net and delete the previous layer that contained the former portrait. No editing required whatsoever (other than cropping a squire of the needed size in the default windows image manager).

The game unpacker can be found in the game wiki. Type "Elminage Gothic mods" in google and you'll find "Game Modding" wiki page. That's where you get the unpacker.

what a useless guide. "edit some files....but im not gonna tell you what files, and my link is to a ancient forum post with the download link removed (probably due to viruses or gpu mining)"

Please update as steam deleted the ufckin' link to the program, and in so doing, negated the usefulness of this excellent guide!

I made a quick 'n' dirty visual reference for all the pics. Feel free to use them in your guide:
