Step by step
1. Browse the installation files for the game and scroll down until you find an application labelled "facedit". Load it.

2. Click the load button in the application and make sure it's searching the installation files for the game (this should be the default).

3. There are two secret developer factions in amongst the files "brian.txt" and "sid.txt". Load either and you'll see the new details for the faction populate the various diplomacy options.

4. Click "Save" and overwrite the .txt file for whichever faction you loaded up and you'll get one more option to add the faction to the game itself. Add it, save, load the game and enjoy playing with the silly diplomacy options and utterly imbalanced, but fun, Singularity Mechanics unlocked from turn one. And of course, you can make your own custom factions for a laugh. Monopole Magnets on turn one makes for a nice smooth ride.

I'll add pictures to this if folks really need them, but I suspect we're all old enough to know how navigate files like this.

Alas, I'm not sure why that would be happening. Sorry I can't be more help.

Thanks to this answer, I found the file but it won't run.
I've tried opening it and "Run as Admin" but it won't start either way.

Yeah, I came to the same conclusion as well. Hopefully they'll patch it?

@mzamecnik I think I managed to confuse myself there! Checked the Rules again and saw the Free Techs option. Tried to add 8 to my test faction and it seemingly did nothing, so either it just doesn't work and you'll have to hand pick a few freebies, or there's a trigger I'm not aware of in game.

@mzamecnik I just tested to double check and the option to add tech is on the Factions screen, not Rules, so I'm not sure if it's a bit of confusion on your end or if you meant that you've added a Faction Bonus - Free Tech on the Faction screen and it's not showing up in game. I tried making a quick test faction and gave them Monopole Magnets and it worked for me just now. Could you clarify?

I have a question, I'm having problems making my own faction. In the rules part of the editor I add that my faction has access to several free techs at the start of the game. But when I fire up the game, I get no free access whatsoever and have to research it normally. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong?
