This is WINDOWS ONLY, PROBABLY. And not guaranteed to fix anything. But it did for me and it's probably worth a shot for you. It won't hurt anything to try at least.

I found this by complete chance because another game I've been wanting to play for years, WIndlands, suffers from the same issue. Luckily someone there had already figured it out and I'm just copying their findings to here so if anybody is still looking for a solution, here it is. :)
How to Run the Game
The process boils down to setting a Windows environment variable:
OPENSSL_ia32cap
to the value:
~0x200000200000000

If you know how to do that, great! Do it, and you should be able to play. If not, continue for a step-by-step guide.
How to Set the Environment Variable
  1. Open Settings and navigate to the "System" tab
  2. Scroll all the way down and click on "About"
  3. If the "Device Specifications" drop-down is closed, open it
  4. Near the bottom of "Device Specifications" there is a "Related links" section, click on "Advanced system settings" from there
  5. Click on the "Environment Variables..." button at the bottom of the window that just opened up
  6. Under "System variables" (the bottom half of the new window), click "New..."
  7. Input "OPENSSL_ia32cap" (without the quotes) as the variable name
  8. Input "~0x200000200000000" (without the quotes) as the variable value
  9. Click OK, OK, OK, and close settings to get rid of all the windows we opened
  10. Attempt to play the game!!!
A Visual Guide
I don't actually have a visual guide, or feel like making one, and this one I found is out of date (Windows 10)[web.archive.org]. But the idea is exactly the same. You can get to the "Advanced System Settings" panel the way I described previously, or by searching for "Edit the system environment variables" in the Windows taskbar. Then, you can just follow along with the rest of the linked visual guide. Enjoy! <3

Hello, Alkyone.
Yes, and I'm using Windows 10

Au Revoir, I haven't heard of that happening though I'm not really in any communities around the game (if there are any). You're exiting Urban Metaphor through the portal to Choose Your Weapon, but it's not unlocking right? What system are you playing on, maybe something like that could be affecting it? With more information I could potentially try to replicate the issue.

Adding the environment variable and setting the game to run as admin made it work, the variable alone didn't work for me.

Hello. Really good guide. May I ask about another problem of mine?
After beating the first level (Urban Metaphor), it should be able to choose between two levels, but one of them (the left one) isn't unlocking for me. I can only choose to play MTRD.
After beating some levels and following the right path, this issue shows up again and I'm not able to play the rest of the game.
Do you know something about this problem?
Thanks in advance
