Keeping this guide easy and simple. If you have issues with lagspikes ruining your gameplay, here are some possible solutions:
  • Close Discord. It mainly happens when Discord tries to refresh the member list, hence why the lagspikes tend to happen every minute or so.
  • Close your browser. It might lag depending on how intensive the current thing you are running in your browser. I can provide one example where it lags for me, similarly to Discord if I have Twitch open it likes to lag when it refreshes the viewers/streamers in the following channels list.
  • Set your game's priority to High. It's something that you need to do pretty frequently in fangames, as its set to Normal by default. If you are not playing Maker the lag is more subtle when playing fangames made in GameMaker Studio, unlike games made in GameMaker 8.
  • Have OBS open. I'm not sure how relevant this trick is in modern times, but I still do it everytime (it also gives me an excuse to record something if its worth uploading)

Additionally, you want to download this tool from Delicious Fruit and apply it to the games you have in your folder: Game Maker Patch Tool - Debugger Helper

GameMaker 8 fangames have an extra frame of input lag, and if you run a Studio game in later versions of Windows 10 and 11 (I believe every update after 2004?) and the maker did not include DBGHELP.dll in their game the game will have a lower framerate than 50 FPS which is the norm in fangames. This tool fixes those issues.
