ZMR New Player Help and FAQ to PVP!
By doto
Hey, guys. I've been reading a lot of negativity about ZMR. Some have good thoughts and some, spoiler alert, don't. Theres a lot of false things spread about ZMR PVP and I'd like to clear things up so I'm making this guide / FAQs to help new players out. I'll be updating this kinda-sorta with information that could help out the average-joe or with more FAQs that I see in game. Things that may be added later on could be stuff like weapons, map flow and such... We'll see. But, keep in mind... This is totally, 100% completely JUST FROM A PVP SIDE OF THINGS. Applying what is here to PvE may result in injury or death, ridicule from friends, family and your significant other, breast physics being removed from ZMR, senpai's notice never coming your way, and many, many corgis crying. Think about the corgis, man.

Seeing that Slay made a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ amazing guide that covers a lot of basics, here I'll be adding some notes about obscure tactics in ZMR and small little tips and tricks.

Edit: Oct 6th, 2014 - added two new sections that cover Rolling and 'Slicing the Pie'.

New Player FAQs!
Do the breast actually jiggle?

Yes. This is one of the major, defining features of ZMR.

Is this game P2W?

No. Some of the best guns in the game is available through gold. M110, AK47, UMP, 870MCS.

Are guns only able to be permed through EMP?

No. It takes quite a bit of gold to perm a gun (AK47 needs 343000) but you can do it. Sorry you have to work for it.

Do Assault/ZK damage boosts / stat changes and does armor reduce damage in PVP?

No. There is no damage reduction from armor in PVP. Weapon stats are the same as their non Assault/ZK twins, except Assault guns have more bullets in reserve and in the clip.

Is VIP worth it, atm?

No. It gives small bonuses, but it isn't worth it.

Fayygo-Senpai, I have gold! Which gun should I buy first?

I've always been a huge fan of the AK47. The AK47 + Bayonet combo is god-dang top tier as kittens. Like, Doom/Magneto in UMVC3 Top Tier. It takes one bullet and a melee to down someone which is unspeakably good if someone tries to rush you down with a shotgun. It also, with a damage boost barrel, does one shot headshots while the base damage by it's is just amazing. And It doesnt have good hip fire, but it doesnt take that many bullets to put a guy in the dirt. 11/10 gun. My second recommendation would be the UMP45. Great damage and versatility, seeing it's good at all ranges. Slap a suppressor and laser sight and you got a beast for close quarter / mid range run and gunning.

Fayygo-Senpai, I have EMP! Which gun should I buy first?

Firstly, get Big Time Boxes. Dropping ten dollars on a guns big time box is a lot cheaper than dropping twenty on the perm. You find those in the EMP then click on Items. Just get a couple of those, one at a time, and open them and combine after you're done. Some of my favorite EMP weapons are:
  • P90
  • Vector
  • Super 90/M3
  • T91
  • Kar98k
  • QBU-88
  • StG 44
  • TAR21
  • QSZ-92

I've seen some beautiful flowing hair in PVP! Where do I get those so I can be beautiful!

You can get those from the Hair Changer for 495 EMP. Theres exclusive voices, as well. Not sure about exclusive faces.

Some guns have Stock and Bottom attatchments but there is nothing to buy. Do I have to get them through shooting gallery?

Yes. They're only through bullets and gifts for leveling up.

Gas Grenades or Fire Bombs?

Both good, does the same thing but used in different ways. I like Fire Bomb for TDM. It does explosive damage that can kill and the fire damage afterwards can pick off people who got caught in the blast. It's also great intimidation to get someone to roll out of cover and into your bullets. Gas Grenades don't have explosion damage, but covers a lot larger area and can damage through walls. That is the biggest advantage Gas Grenades has over Fire Bombs.

CLAYMORES MAKE ME RAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111 How do I survive them!?!?

Roll forward. Also, claymores can only be destroyed by explosives. However, flame bombs and bullets don't set them off. They have to be frag grenades, grenade launcher rounds, rockets. Things that explode.

I checked 'disable roll on double-tap of WASD .... but I still roll?

Odd localization error. Check it off and you wont roll from double tapping WASD.

I shot a guy with bullets from a shotgun and my hip-fire reticule was on him and my bullets did nothing and missed. I did all the math. He should of died.

You see, Ivan. To shoot the accurate you have to put reticule slightly to the right. The hip-fire reticule in-game is slightly off.

Shameless Plugging!

I also have a couple of reviews on a few guns that ZMR has and one on the worst gun in the game - the FAL. Spoiler Alert: It sucks

Knowing your right hand like your best friend... RHA and you!
What is Right Hand Advantage?

Ever notice how you can't swap shoulders in ZMR? Well, that gives you a very particular advantage (or disadvantage) when you're pushing/advanancing or defending against the enemy. This is called Right Hand Advantage. Basically, RHA is when you are behind, but not in cover and aiming from the right side of it, you can fill your opponents with the b00lets while having most, if not all, of your body still in cover. While the advancing enemy needs to expose more of himself/herself to fill you with the b00lets because the camera/reticule is on his right side.

The video linked shows this used perfectly. In Gears, using RHA was *crucial* to success when defending against an assaulter/rush-down and survival when pressuring and advancing on the enemy.

Okay, I gotchu, breh. So, how do I use it?

Just try to keep on the right side of things. Don't be afraid to use your camera, instead of your character, to peak a corner and see whats up. Also, if you're on the right side of cover - DO NOT take cover. Just stand behind it. Only do this on the left side of cover.

Okay, breh.. Fayygo, breh... I see a guy. He has RHA. I don't. But... I want to kill him. What do?

This is a tricky situation. Knowing when to fight or fly, again, is vital to what makes a good player or a bad one. Some just like to yolo it up and go in rollin' in with the 870 or M11. Sure, it's fun. But it isn't smart. And, 8 times out of ten it will get you killed against a good player. This is the situation where I don't advance. And, if I have to, I use grenades to flush them out and force rolls. RHA is dangerous. Extremely so if the defender has a shotgun and is ready to send your butt back to spawn.

Is this fair and should there be shoulder swapping?

Some people love it, some people hate it. I, for one, like having the camera locked. It adds another factor to consider when advancing and moving on the map and it harder. I like harder. Makes for more skillful plays. I think it's totally fair and should be left alone. But, this is completely my opinion and me just sharing it.
Pie!? You said pie! Where's the pie!
What the heck is 'slicing the pie'

Well, you see, Ivan, in first person shooters there's this tactic called 'slicing the pie'. It's pretty much moving in out and of cover to get sight on enemy without exposing most/all of your body.

The video linked explains it the best. Basically, use the camera to spot tangos before you tango and move the character out as less as possible to actually get your gun on him. Keep in mind that you need enough room, in ZMR, to actually shoot. Ever notice how you ADS and you sometimes get an 'x'? That means your cover is obstructing your gun and you cannot shoot.

So ... there's no pie and this is pretty much RHA?

Well, no and yes. RHA is something used to actually put the pain on the enemy. You can still RHA and flop because you exposed a lot/too much of your body and got shot in the face. This is where you would 'slice the pie'. Expose just enough of that lovely bod of yours to get your gun trained on the baddies. Not too much or you may get your face blown off. Not too less or you may just be shooting the wall.
Autobots! Roll out!
Roll, roll, roll your butt!

Rolling! Let's talk about that. You see a lot of people rolling around in ZMR. Some people do it right while a lot of people do it wrong. Hitting spacebar does not make your character immune to damage. What it does make you immune to, however, is the melee stun at a certain moment. But, do not use it in a way that you think that you can rise up and retialiate to all fights and come out on top. Getting melee'd does massive damage to you, depending on what smacked you in the dome-piece in the first place.

When to do your roll!

So, when should you roll? Most of the time, personally, I roll around when I'm tranversing the map. The biggest boon of rolling, to me, is that you can move your camera around while your character is in mid-roll. So, if you're advancing onto a point you can still check your surroundings and behind you while advancing forward. That's just moving around the map, though.

When fighting, I don't really like to roll. Rolling gets iffy in combat. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Rolling around a tight corner or someone who has RHA on you and didn't pie well or check his/her surroundings is an amazing ambush tactic, really with a shotgun in your hands. While rolling you can position your reticule on the tango so when you raise up you're ready to send his/her butt back to spawn with a hole in their head.

However! ... Rolling has it's disadvantages. Rolling at any direction infront, or while in field of view of a skilled player who sees you is giving that person a free kill. While rolling, as said, you aren't immune to damage. Unless the ping gets spotty, the person shooting at you can easily predict the distance you're going to roll and shoot you as you're rising. If you rolled at them, they can just easily punish you with a shoryuken.

If you want to roll in combat, heres some tips:

  • Be unpredictable if you're using it to be aggressive. If they predict, then you're probably going to be put at a disadvantage.
  • Use it to be defensive. Roll inbetween cover to minimize your time exposed while under fire. Roll backwards and into cover if you decided to push but you underestimated their defense, a person just spawned, or for whatever reason.
  • Shotguns are best for close quarter rolling. The 870 is pretty much king at this. You can shoot and immediately roll after the shot, which was known as the 'superman' in Gears of War, to keep your mobility and your momentum up. I do this all the time when I flank behind enemy lines and I dont have time to stop and smell the roses. I need to get the kills and bug out. It's a really good aggressive tactic.
  • Think of it like a fighting game move. When you roll, you have to complete that animation before you can react. Just like in a fighting game, where if you use an attack that can be easily punished if wiff'd or is just plain horrible on block you're going to get smacked in the face. Roll to much or roll wrong and you're asking for a delicious meal of hot lead.

Remember this creed, guys and gals. Move fast, move smart, move hard.

shoulder swapping could be a very good addition to the game, but that will also change the learning curve of the game. so for casuals No, for hardcores YES. All that is up to the developers to consider.
