OK. After hours of waiting, many restarts and plenty of googling, THIS is the way.

If ANY of your friends are in the game, go to the Steam friend and click "Join Game" with your Helldivers closed.
This will instantly give you entry to the game.

If you do not have anyone to join, help each other out in the comment section <3
