Intro
Ys Origin is a very old Windows game made by a very small company and it definitely shows. Windows 10 appears to have broken a lot of compatibility with this game. If you just started trying to play Ys Origin and are running into various issues, please try some of the fixes here to finally get you started.
Issues and Fixes
  • Issue: Config will not run.
Fix: Find config.exe in the install directory and set it to run as administrator.

  • Issue: Movies don't play or only show black screen with audio.
    Fix:
    (1) With K-Lite Codec Pack installed, a fix has been discovered by Reddit user Trilkin. Please follow the instructions in his post. It works in both Windows 10/11.

First, Open the Codec Tweak Tool

It's a part of your K-Lite pack installation. You can typically just open the Start Menu and start typing to search, but otherwise it'll be in the K-Lite Codec Pack start menu folder.

Next, click on DirectShow Filters under the Configuration header.

This will open an additional window of options.

Click on LAV video decoder under the Video Decoders header.

    This will open another window.

    Click on the Formats tab.

    Uncheck the 'mpeg4' (MPEG-4 part 2) codec.

    Click Apply and then Ok.

You can close the other windows.

This will deregister the codec pack's LAV splitter from MPEG4 (read: XVid) videos in everything other than MPC (the bundled media player with the codec pack,) using whatever bundled DLL is with the software or falling back to Windows' own method instead. After these steps, you should see video in Ys Origin.

Hopefully this saves someone some aggravation or keeps them from outright turning off the videos in the future.

  • Issue:
    (1) Cannot bind actions to controller in config and/or
    (2) controller repeatedly moves in 1 direction (example: selected option in main menu repeatedly moves up or down).
Note: Controller input handling in this game is deeply flawed. Trigger buttons are treated as analog 2-direction axis inputs in the game code and ALL axis inputs, whether they are triggers or sticks, are astonishingly mapped to directional input. Therefore, triggers continually input a direction even if not pressed (made very obvious in the main menu).
Fix: Enable Steam Input for this game and use a community layout that maps controller buttons to keyboard keys (use with default Preset Type 1 in config). Do not use the official Steam Input layout by Nihon Falcom. Highly recommend using a layout that sets Use Skill/Magic (default 'C' key) to a trigger for easier charging while jumping or attacking.

  • Issue: Glitchy graphics like missing textures, things not rendering properly, random things generally looking off, etc.
Fix: The DirectX 9 versions of Falcom games published by XSEED are very buggy. This unfortunately includes both the Ys and Trails series. The original versions of many of these games were made using DirectX 8. When offered the chance, play using the original DX8 versions instead.

  • Issue: Various gameplay-related issues or bugs.
Fix: Turn on V-sync. This game suffers from the same bugs as the Ark of Napishtim and Oath in Felghana games due to using the same engine as those games. The cause seems to be related to tying the framerate of the game to gameplay or effect functions and this is why V-sync is crucial to running the game correctly.

Sorry for the super late reply, but I just thought of something. In other Falcom games like Trails in the Sky, I noticed the DirectX 9 versions are very buggy compared to the DirectX 8 versions. Did you try running the DX8 version instead? The missing texture might be a bug in the DX9 version.

My settings are similar, only my GPU is different and it's displayed weirdly... Idk if I have a chinese bootleg or not but this is the first game i've had any issues with

Another bug i've noticed is with the purple spinning blade enemies in the last level. For me, the spinning blades have a flat white color when thrown and no purple "cap" that the enemies have. I watched a video on youtube and they're supposed to look exactly like they do when attached to the enemy, with proper shading and all

I'm not sure about the Rado's Annex texture. Here are the config options I used: https://imgur.com/a/oX7c1OP
