The Layout
Some keys are shifted to the right and others elsewhere. C is a free key. The biggest improvement is the reassignment of Page Up / Page Down to G / A, which I use all the time. (Holding Ctrl while building a path lets you keep it level.) "Activate Move Cursor" is used frequently so should be moved closer to the left hand.

"Status" uselessly shows info you already see on the HUD so I moved it somewhere random since we can't unassign functions for some reason. "Upgrade" appears to be useless as well (does nothing if you try it on a barn); I believe this came from an older time when you had to manually upgrade houses.

Special thanks to the train game Railgrade (ESDF guide) which also relies heavily on raising and lowering tracks.

Escape is the bottom left key on my Planck keyboard, and conveniently my Delete is Lower Layer + Escape for easy one-handed access (and not prone to accidents).

I notice that "Back" (default Z) does the same thing as Escape except without showing the pause/system menu. Z and C may be swapped with a commonly used right side function of your choice.

Taking Screenshots
We can toggle hotbar but can't toggle UI. Using the game's (not Steam's) screenshot function automatically hides the UI for the screenshot, though a dedicated hotkey would be nice.

F11 automatically opens the %localappdata% folder where screenshots are stored:
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\LocalLow\82 Apps\Factory Town\Screenshots

@RuinxSpookalation The word "natural" here refers to touch typing's home row position (which may be irrelevant to you or most), not "I will intuitively remap to this on my own" from the user or "devs will make this default". Obviously most players of any game wouldn't automatically change from defaults. In a sense, "natural" can refer to making most relevant / commonly used keys accessible to the hand without sweeping across or looking at the keyboard.

Anyway, moving things from Page Up/Down to somewhere nearby is a nontrivial QoL. The "guide" is here to exist and share ideas. The aforementioned is one; ESDF'ism is another.
if it's so natural why do we need an entire guide to show us the "correct" layout?
