There is one period of time where you can grow as many Squash as you want. That is after you fix the machine with Fish Oil and a Wooden Plank but BEFORE you check the machine a second time.

Your Squash won't grow while the game window isn't open.

According to User: Nehurion the save feature doesn't save the number of Squash you harvested. So this is a one session achievement. Or just leave your computer running with the game open.

I timed the growth of Squash for a few rounds. From what I can tell it takes roughly 3 minutes for a Squash to grow from a seed to a harvest-able plant. Sleeping or watering multiple times does not seem to speed up growth. But watering at least once does seem to shave 15 seconds of the growth time.

Getting to 500 Squash will take about 4 and a half hours.

4 and a half hours is a solid grind. After you plant you have 3 minutes to do whatever you like.
