Please do not read this guide using Steam client, because all game links do not work properly.
I strongly advise you to use a web browser to read this guide.
INTRODUCTION
When I was playing some of these games, every time they made me ask one question:
"Why the hell are these games free?"
That is the main reason I wanted to make this guide, and to let a lot of people know how much these developers love their games, even to release them for free.

In brief, here you will find all the free-of-charge games I played in the last years, and ranked depending on the quality of the game and how much I enjoyed it.


The games are ranked as follows:

This ranking is based on my personal preferences, so there are some games that you may not like, but at the same time you can find your next favourite game.


Demos and prologues are marked with the * symbol at the end of the game name.
Games that have achievements behind paid DLCs are marked with the ** symbol.
Benchmarks, tools and similar are marked with the *** symbol.


Requirements in which free games must have to be in this ranking:
- games that are free not for a limited time;
- free-to-play games that don't have microtransactions or in-game purchases;
- free games may have paid DLCs, but they must not to be required to beat a game, therefore they just have to offer extra content.

Asphalt Legends Unite (formerly known as Asphalt 9 Legends)

Pros:
- Amazing arcade racing game
- Plenty of good-looking cars
- For a mobile game ported on PC, graphic is quite good
- Soundtracks are good
- You can unlock all the achievements without spending money (there are a couple that requires grinding)

Cons:
- Most of the game modes and the fastest supercars are locked behind a paywall
- Some of those cars requires to spend hundreds of dollars to unlock them, and some are impossibile to unlock by playing free-to-play only
- Online multiplayer races have pay-to-win players
- Season Pass and blueprint packs are very pricey

Recommendation:
Overall, Asphalt Legend Unite is a good racing game if you don't mind microtransactions, but I suggest to play other racing games, such as Forza Horizon or Need for Speed.

Multiversus

Pros:
- Free-to-play Super Smash Bros. on PC
- A good amount of different characters from Warner Bros. movies and TV shows (LeBron James included)
- Voice actors did a great job

Cons:
- You can't play with friends in the same room (no local multiplayer)
- Unbalanced characters
- Season Pass
- Most characters are locked (unlocking them isn't cheap)
- Game content is small
- Multiversus online is about to die (again)

Recommendation:
If you don't have a Nintendo console to play Super Smash Bros., consider to try it, but I personally don't recommend it.

Animation Throwdown: The Quest of Cards

Pros:
- A lot of characters from famous adult tv shows (Family Guy, Futurama, American Dad, King of the Hill, Bob's Burger, Archer)
- Good variety of cards
- You can unlock all the achievements without spending money (a couple require grinding)

Cons:
- Some levels in Story Mode are nearly impossible to beat, unless you don't spend money (and get lucky) on card packs, otherwise you have to farm cards
- Unoriginal and terrible music; they could have use some of the soundtracks from these shows
- Season Pass and card packs are expensive
- Online multiplayer has pay-to-win players

Recommendation:
There are way better card battler games on Steam, and they can be often found on deep discount. I don't recommended it.

Hamster Playground

Pros:
- Microtransactions only concern skins, dress, and home decorations
- Probably the best hamster game on Steam
- There aren't achievements behind a paywall

Cons:
- There is only one free background music (aside from minigame modes). The other ones are locked behind DLCs
- Only 1 of 5 minigame is free of charge (developers gave away some for free to early access players)
- Gameplay is lacking (there's not much to do)
- DLCs are overpriced
- Can be very repetitive after some hours
- Two achievements required to farm the level for 20+ hours

Recommendation:
You might love it if you've a liking for hamsters. Generally speaking, I don't recommend it.

Nice Jumper

Pros:
- quick to learn, and to play
- works great with a controller
- 100% achievements in a few hours
- premium content is cheap (it contains extra cosmetics, x2 points boost, and 1 additional life)

Cons:
- no background music
- works terribly with a mouse (keyboard controls are decent)
- can be repetitive after 15 minutes
- sometimes platforms don't work as intended (check out this short video about this issue)

Recommendation:
Good game for a quick play. Give it a try, it just takes 5 minutes of your time and about 80 MB of disk space.

Lately I've been playing REFLEXIA, and I can already say it's a charming visual novel.

Thank you so much for making this list :) I’m always looking for great free games on Steam. Unfortunately these kinds of games get frequently overshadowed by paid ones.

May I also recommend REFLEXIA Prototype ver.? I think it’s a pretty decent game to add to the list. It’s kinda similar to DDLC but much shorter and with a unique artstyle. It’s also rated overwhelmingly positive on Steam so I think many would get enjoyment out of it.

I also recommend Boodunit and Farewell Sen. Boodunit is a short mystery game while Farewell Sen is a short rpg maker puzzle/combat game.

Also, I’ll let you know in the future if I find any good free games on my journey that aren’t on this list.
