How to defeat a stronger empire in late game
By Persreikuli
How to bring down a stronger AI opponent easily - with stellar converters. Lots of 'em.

Here's how it works:
If another empire has way more colonies and produces ships like crazy in late game, here's how to beat it:

Hopefully you still are at peace with them.
Build battleships with Battle Pods and 1 Stellar Converter plus whatever rudimentary defense systems you may be able to squeeze in there. Or build Doom Stars with 3 Stellar Converters on separate banks. Group a few of these, say 4-5 battleships or just 1 Doom star plus couple of battleships. and send them around the galaxy in strategic positions (near enemy colonies, obviously). Maybe leave some in reserve, but don't spread out this reserve: Use it to guard your most important star system, IE somewhere heavily fortified, with multiple planets pers system.

When the fleets are in position, send them out as small battlegroups as described above. 3 stellar converter shots per turn from your fleet should be able to neutralize the defenses of a star system if there's no fleet, a Star Fortress and all of the ground defense buildings are no match for stellar converters if you get to shoot first.

Hopefully you spread out the fleets in a way that multiple enemy colonies get attacked per turn. If you absolutely want to cheese out this approach, you can even destroy the enemy planets with the stellar converter afterwards, thus limiting their potential re-colonization efforts after your fleets leave. At some point when enough enemy colonies have been destroyed, you can re-group the smaller battle groups into a humungous fleet, because the AI seems to love attacking with huge fleets. This way, you may be able to experience a huge battle before your fleets turn all enemy systems to gigantic asteroid field graveyards.

This approach takes advantage of the AIs ineffectiveness to counter attacks on multiple systems at the same time and preference to create a single megastack of a fleet at late game, but it isn't cowardly. The late game wars between strong empires able to field multiple dozens of ships are always going to be destructive and there's not as many single decisive battles as say early on if you manage to annihilate the whole enemy fleet and then grab quickly multiple colonies from them. So why not limit your casualties?

Ill throw in, a multi-fire disruptor is game breakingly powerful. Ill make a bunch of titans, with as many of these as i can fit, with struct analyzer and high energy focus - phasing cloak if the enemy is particularly powerful. One ship, can blow up multiple enemy ships with it's alpha strike. after you tech up to level 2 or 3 physics, you can 15-30 or so on there. It's so strong, i intentionally avoid using them because "If i duel him right handed... the fight will be over to quickly and I will not be satisfied..."

Xexorian, agreed! Timewarp Facilitator is OP AF. If your species is cybernetic or you get the Automated Repair Unit tech then Heavy Armor would still be useful late game if you can get Xen armor.

Lord-Narf-XLII, your're right about the mathematics of Disrupter damage. The stellar converter spam over he is mainly due to bragging rights (the best empire is the one that haz the most stellar converters per ship).

PHASING CLOAK + TIMEWARP FACILITATOR + SC, give first turn, after that, take a shot, skip a turn and recloak, you get 10 turns or so in cloak to pop shots off before cloak fails, just retreat after, if you can get dampening fields + xen armor + repair or hard shield + class x shield + shield regen, either way, if you don't move you won't get fired on by point defenses, so you can also use a subspace teleporter and jump then fire, but 360 stellar convertor means u dont really need to turn around either nor move unless you really wanna raid the star fort but you shouldn't need to, just take it out and then the planetary defenses out, retreat, come back and hit just their fleet and defenseless planet, you can even cheese this cloak strat to wipe out their colony pop directly without ever confronting their fleet if you really want.

@17, Sounds like a good way to take out enemy fleets! Although Black hole generators don't work against planetary defenses, so you'd need a few ships with 'normal' weapons (beams, bombs etc).

You can take any size of fleet out with 6 ships or so in this game.
phase cloak
battle pods
the time thingy (gives you two turns)
black hole generator

black hole the baddie, end turn, end turn again
rinse and repeat

Also, another fun trick is to be a heavy G with +20 ground combat, have multiple slots with one or two assault shuttles, get 3 tractor beams too. Just board all the enemy ships, then scrap them for cash. Damper Fields and Xenotronium armor help a lot

Disagree entirely.
The key to late game is the Damper Field. Beside protecting you better than Shields it frees up space for other items, including the best pure weapon in the game. The Mauler.
Give me 5 Doom Star with 45 Heavy Maulers and Once my first four deal with the Antaren fleet (And their Black Hole Generators) my last one will destroy the base station entirely on it's own.

Stellar Converters are rather meh. Doom Stars + LOTS of heavy disrupters are GODS!! Make HORDES of these.

I generally send out 3 with 1 fleet in reserve for mop up purposes. Fleets of about 20 - 30 of those and just smash the baddies.

And for fun some math stuffs.

One heavy disrupter + High Energy Focus = 90 damage. The best planatary shields are class 13 so thats 13 less damage (77 damage) then add in Structural Analyzer thats 154 damage per disrupter now multiply that by 68 and you get 10,472 damage per ship. P.S. yes Structural Analyzers DO work on plantes. hehe. And if you want send outpost ships so you have Star Gates all over so you can get around faster. :steamhappy:
