How do I get to the Workshop for Dominions 6?
There's a few different routes to the Dominions 6 Workshop.

1. Use this link: https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/2511500/workshop/

2. If you have created content in the Workshop, click on your own name in the toolbar, then content, the navigate to the workshop tab.

3. Click on Community in the toolbar, then Workshop, then search for Dominions 6.

4. Go to the Dominions 6 store page and click Community Hub (top right) then click the Workshop tab.

Now you'll probably want to click Browse>Items and you'll see the maps and mods that are available.
How do I get mods from the Workshop?
Once you have found a mod you would like to download from the Workshop, simply click to Subscribe to that mod. Steam now knows that it is supposed to download the most recent version of that mod so Dominions 6 can run it. Once it is downloaded it will be installed too, but not enabled until you choose.

Additionally if that mod is updated by the author, Steam will automatically download the update as soon as it is able to (this may be a good reason to make sure Steam is running and connected periodically on your PC). You will not need to interact with the mod in question again to get updates.

If you want to uninstall a mod simply navigate to it on the Workshop and click Unsubscribe. The mod will soon be removed from your PC.

If you want to be easily able to navigate to a particular mod you can tag it as a Favourite, which remains as a tag even if you Unsubscribe (in case you might want to subscribe again later).
How and when do I use the mods I've downloaded?
Just having downloaded a Workshop mod will do nothing unless you enable it. To do so open up Dominions 6 and from the main menu click Mods.

You will now see a list of all the mods you have installed. If any of these mods are not Workshop mods but have been installed locally the old fashioned way, they will have '(local)' appear after their name. If you don't make mods yourself and only get mods from the workshop you shouldn't see any of these.

To enable any mod, simply click on it. Mods which are currently enabled will show a green check/tick next to them.

Now when you return to the main menu you will see the icons for any mods which you have enabled appear in the top right of your screen. Any game you now create will be created with those mods enabled.

It is not possible to enable a mod in a game after it has started, or to change which mods are enabled for that game.

You do not need to enable the mods again before resuming a game - whenever you load a game it will automatically enable any mods which were enabled when you first made it.

There is one more case where you may need to enable a mod before doing something - when you create a new pretender via Tools & Manuals->Create a Pretender God (or create a pretender god for a disciples game, or create a disciple). This is because the mod may change which nations/pretenders are available, or change the properties of existing pretenders. So if you want to create a Pretender specifically for a modded game, it's best to enable the mods before creating the Pretender.
Why are there multiple versions of a mod in my list of Mods?
TLDR: My advice is when making a new game - enable the latest static version of the mod you want to use.

The most likely answer is that the mod author has decided to include static versions of the mod in the subscription. Let's consider a hypothetical example. You download a mod called 'Mega Awesome Nations'. When you look in your Mods list within Dominions 6, you see the following:

  • Mega Awesome Nations v1
  • Mega Awesome Nations v2
  • Mega Awesome Nations v2.1
  • Mega Awesome Nations Current Version (2.1)

The reason the author has done this is to support people who have already started a game using a previous version of the mod. When a Workshop mod is updated that update will automatically go out to all the subscribers, but if you make certain updates to a mod (like adding and removing things, changing ID usage etc) then it can cause problems or even completely break any existing games which use the mod.

By including static versions, the user (that's you) is able to start a game with whatever the most recent version of the mod was when they started the game and be sure that it will not be overwritten in an update that might break that game.

Sometimes mod authors will also include something which is called 'latest version' or 'current version' or 'dynamic version' or simply does not have a version number. This version of the mod is very likely to be automatically updated if the mod is updated by the creator. It might be the case that the mod author knows there will be no update that could break ongoing games, or it might be that they're just giving you an option to accept the risk of midgame updates, in exchange for the potential benefits (bugfixes etc).
Can I mix and match as many mods as I like?
Technically speaking, yes, however there is a big risk of mod conflicts making mods incompatible with each other.

Mod conflicts are when more than one enabled mod is modifying the same thing, or using the same set of internal IDs. When mods conflict in this way, the last one to be loaded takes precedence and may completely break the other mods you have enabled.

Certain mods will by their nature be very compatible with other mods because they don't use specific IDs, or only modify things that other mods don't change, but almost all mods that add new content to the game or modify the same existing content as other mods have a high risk of being incompatible.

Mods conflicting can completely crash the game, cause very unexpected things (why am I able to recruit gods in my forts for no gold?? Why am I being attacked by demons in every province every turn???) and just generally make for a bad time and a broken game.

So my advice is: only use mods that are explicitly stated to be compatible with each other, or are described as being generally compatible with the other types of mod you want to use. If in doubt, you can always seek out the author, or other modders in the community, and ask them.
Technical: Where do Workshop Mods live on my computer?
Workshop mods downloaded by Steam don't live in the normal mods subdirectory for Dominions 6. Instead you can find them by looking in your SteamLibrary area in the workshop folder, subfoldered in content, in the folder with the Dominions 6 ID (2511500) and then with their own Workshop ID codes.

For example on my PC it's "D:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\workshop\content\2511500" and then there's one folder per mod, with each folder having a workshop ID (a string of numbers).

You shouldn't need to know where they are or interact with them on your local storage as a user though, Steam and Dom6 will handle this.

@regou13: Ah ok, that's a question about mapping. This is a guide to mods, not maps. I can't really help you with maps.

In dom 5 you only need to modify the .map file with wordpad but if i try in Dom 6 i got an error message when i launch the game.
Thx for your reply
