History of Scaevola Smart Systems
By Tyro
This document should describe the creation of Scaevola Smart Systems, as well as the biography of its founder and head-designer, Tyro Scaevola. We believe that a detailed personal story can answer questions about our work, our philosophy and us. We feel that codifying our history will create proper foundations for our future.

Tyro Scaevola - Early years and first experience
Tyro Ziegler was born into a relatively wealthy family. His father was Konstantin Ziegler, owner and director of ZMT - Ziegler Motorwerke Troppau. This company focused on developing and manufacturing rovers of various types and purposes.

Tyro was raised to take over the company after his father's retirement. To get some experience in design, he was given a relatively free hand in choosing what would be the purpose of his creation. However, old Mr. Ziegler was not happy when his son presented atmospheric reconnaissance aircraft. As a pacifist, focused solely on business, he did not see any future in military equipment.

For some time, Tyro was working on various projects while secretly developing his own designs. He found his passion for flying, effectivity and simplicity. After some time, however, his father realized Tyro has been investing his time into something he did not agree with. Tyro's older brother was appointed as heir of the business and Tyro was given two options: To stay, follow orders and become manager of one of the branches, or to go and find his way without support of his family.
So after 3 years in ZMT, Tyro started from scratch - changed his surname to Scaevola because of famous Roman house of Scaevola and the rumor of the foundation of that house (Scaevola means "left-handed"; so was Tyro). He founded Scaevola Armament Design, and he tried to get various contracts, but was not successful. Usually, SAD was rejected because of lack of experience. In just a couple of months, the company went bankrupt.

Tyro knew he would need to get some experience, and so he decided to join a mining expedition heading to one of the asteroid fields far away from their home planet.
Tyro Scaevola - New home
Twelve hundred miners, various support-role workers and their families boarded twenty vessels developed so they could be joined and serve as base. After a long journey, explorers finally arrived and established their base, named Ardena after Jonathan Ardena, famous nautical explorer of old times. Miners were eager to explore their new system, but nobody expected the terror they would have to go through in the nearest future.

When the first of the exploring ships arrived near the asteroid fields, they were already watched by "The collective" - united pirate clans, which were defeated and had to withdraw to deep space. There they were able to establish themselves and prosper, but still needed to raid to obtain precious materials, luxurious resources and also slaves. Such an expedition was a true gift to them.
Tyro Scaevola - Fighting for life
Just a few days after exploring ships were joined, and the base was set, the first pirates arrived. Defenseless mining ships were being destroyed, the base itself was damaged and even though it had relatively strong defense systems, Ardenians were not able to destroy pirates, only kept them at the distance. With almost no resources, the base full of women and children and without much of experience in combat, people of Ardena started building their home-made fighters to save their lives.
Fights were frequent and brutal, with no side taking the upper hand. However, while pirates were able to replenish their loses, Ardenians paid the bloody price for every failure. Therefore, Defense Forces of Ardena - DFA was established as high-command, squadrons were organized and a handful of the most successful pilots were chosen as designers, with their task of improving their home-made designs into simple, yet effective machines. Tyro was one of them and for the next months, he was among the most successful designers. His SC-25 played the crucial part in the first months of the "war for the future".

DFA was able to establish defensive perimeter, mining squadrons could get some resources and with that large-grid designs were needed. Even though Tyro had a plenty of experience as pilot and designer by that, he was just mildly successful with his Torgun class corvette and Parthan class Frigate. He nevertheless continued and served as a fighter-bomber pilot.
Tyro Scaevola - Pyrrhic victory
Approximately eighteen months after the beginning of the war for future, The collective collapsed. Infighting started among their ranks and with that Ardenians were able to breath. But the price was enormous. Only a couple of hundreds of people survived, Ardena seemed like a base of ghosts. The decision was made to go back home. Ardenians were boarding transport ships with mixed feelings. They won, survived, and yet they had to retreat. 18 months of hell, and for nothing. For Tyro, it was not easy to accept the decision. As he was escorting refugees in his latest fighter model called Verra, he promised himself he would never be defeated again. Some battles can be lost, but war must be won!
ScaVeM to Scaevola Vessel Design
After return from his journeys, Tyro Scaevola has decided that it was the right time to start working on his designs. Scaevola Vessel Manufactury was founded with Tyro as the head-designer.

Since Torgun and Parthan were old and obsolete designs, new capital ships were designed and tested with mixed results. At first, complexity, together with questionable value in a fight, were reasons that ScaVeM did not score any major success on the market. For the Outlands series, a series of capital ships was designed, but did not arouse the interest of the factions.

Scaevola's attempt to produce competitive vehicle design in the form of VfS III resulted in failure as well.

In these times, ScaVeM was renamed to Scaevola Vessel Design in order to cut themselves off from a history of failures.

The much-needed success was brought by new small grid designs. Even though the atmospheric SC-103 did not attract any attention, both Multipurpose Universal Vessel - Industrial (known as 'MUVI') and Verra fighter were generally well rated and widely used.

After this success, a new series of capital ships was designed. The 'Aristea' line, however, was plagued with technical issues. Together with low performance and somewhat troublesome design, no version of Aristea nor Kibera gunboats were produced. The same was true for Enox corvette, unsuccessful successor of the famous Torgun.

Again, small grid designs were much successful, especially remote-controlled fighter models Nima and Juno. Scaevola also experimented with universal fighter-bomber design strategy, resulting in extravagant Stagir, and reliable Luchnik variants.

Age of successes for SVD
Finally, somewhat competitive capital ship designs reached some success. Although not classified properly (both being a little bit big for frigates by later SFSD), both were rated well and underwent tests for various organizations.

Then, finally, a new series of capital ships was accepted into service of a navy, bringing much needed experience, recognition and also money to finance future design projects. The most successful was the Dacan Class, designed by the new standards, simplified, but filled with useful features. After somewhat forgotten Spratek corvette, Zloun Class frigate was praised for its classical design philosophy, combined with smart features. Rabiat Class later replaced Zloun, combining successful features from both Dacan and Zloun classes.

In that time, Scaevola started experimenting with future small grid models, SC-55 and SC-381, the former being designed for mass production, while the latter being designed for competitions and presentations.
SVD in Ravien Industrial Corporate
The most important feature of SC-381 were its guided missiles. By this product, Scaevola has opened new market possibilities.

After exhausting experiments, GM-3 was finally accepted into service and used on the SC-381 prototype. This surprisingly successful gadget meant that SVD once again brought attention to itself.

Thanks to that, Ravien Industrial Corporate, a big industrial complex with many important customers, gained interest in Scaevola's company. SVD underwent reorganization and under a new name, Scaevola Smart Systems, designs its own AI devices, while also providing design work for other branches under RIC.
