Weapon Splash Modes, Icons, and Attack Name Keywords
FtK II introduces a 2x4 tactical battle map.
Weapons now gain geometrical splash damage patterns.
These are indicated in three ways:

A. by icons under the weapon art
B. by keywords in the weapons' attack names
~~~~ press Shift to toggle the card view ~~~~
C. by phrases in the weapon ability text
However, #A and #C are currently separated by pressing Shift to toggle the card view.
We cannot see both the icons and the ability texts at the same time.
Already, this creates a puzzle to solve:
+ Given a set of icons on the front of the card, we know that
every icon matches up 1:1 (or m:n) with 1+ attack or ability on the back of the card.
- However, you still don't know which icon matches exactly with which ability.
We can partially solve this by learning card text phrases that usually match icons.
This Guide presents some distilled knowledge in matching #A with #B and #C.
~~~~

This information is not currently in the Encyclopedia, nor in any in-game card or pop-up.

The in-game Tutor does briefly highlight weapon icons and describe their damage splash modes,
but only one time each, the first time you ever see them in a game.

Perhaps a later hotfix will render this Guide unnecessary.
Until then, enjoy!

v1.0 2023/11/12
v1.1 2023/11/16: Added Heavy Attack; Ignore Resist.
v1.2 2023/11/23: Added Splash (Corrupts Tiles); Splash (May Target Empty); this version log.
Single Target
Single Target is shown as a white hexagon.

  • It targets 1 enemy (or friendly).
  • It may not target an empty square. (But why would you want to?)
  • It has no splash or area damage.
C. It always matches the phrase "Single Target", (1.0.22) and this is now unique.

Most weapons have at least 1 single-target attack, so most weapons show this icon.
Splash
Splash is shown as a cyan quadruple-arrow.

  • It affects a T-shaped region on the board.
  • It must target 1 enemy (or friendly).
  • It may not target an empty square.
  • The targeted square takes full damage.
  • All neighbors take splash damage, which is 1/2 damage unless the text states otherwise.
C. (Patch 1.0.22)
  • It matches the text phrase "Splash Damage", and this is unique.
  • In addition, Physical Damage is shown in white, and Magic Damage is shown in purple.
B. It has weapon attack keywords "All", "Blast", and "Group".
  • With keywords "Aura" and "Neighbors", it is self-target only, and has T-splash effect.
  • With keyword "Party" (c.f. Party Heal), it targets any friendly, and has T-splash effect.
  • With keyword "Bomb":
    • Lesser/(normal)/Greater Bomb (Daze) and Smoke Bomb (Interrupt) have instantaneous effect only, with T-splash pattern.
    • Elemental Bombs (Acid, Poison, Fire, Water) and Goblin Bomb (Confuse) have (Corrupts Tiles) persistent effect. See Splash (Corrupts Tiles).
Splash (Corrupts Tiles)
Has identical icon and text as Splash, which see.
  • You cannot currently distinguish Splash (Corrupts Tiles) from icon or text alone.

B. With weapon attack keyword "Bomb":
  • Acid, Poison, Fire, and Water Bomb have T-splash pattern with (Corrupts Tiles) effect.
  • On perfect roll, they Corrupt all T-splash target tiles with their element.
  • Tile corruption normally lasts 2 rounds, then expires.
  • A tile can have multiple Corruption effects at the same time.
  • Exception 1: Wet and Fire immediately replace each other?
    The most-recent of the two takes precedence.
  • Exception 2: Wet washes away Confuse in 1 round?
  • Any friendly or enemy that ends its round in a Corrupted tile gains all of the tile's Corruptions as Ailments (see Encyclopedia). Each Ailment has its own 2-round duration, separate from the tile Corruption's duration.
To dispel a Corrupted tile is to purify the tile.
  • Purify Scroll has T-splash effect, and flags its tiles with Purified effect:
    • Dispels all Corruptions in its tiles
    • Immunity to Corruption for 2 rounds
    • Any friendly that ends its round in a Purified tile gains Purified Buff:
      • Dispels all Ailments (temporary negative effects; see Encyclopedia) on friendly
      • Immunity to Ailments for 2 rounds
  • Any weapon with Purify ability has the same effect as a Scroll (on perfect).

Goblin Bomb also has (Corrupts Tiles) with Confuse, but doesn't use T-splash pattern.

  • Crude Goblin Bomb is Single Target only (and Corrupts 1 tile)
  • Goblin Bomb is Column attack (and Corrupts 2 tiles)

B. Weapon attack keyword "Storm" indicates a 2x3 Area attack with (Corrupts Tile) effect, if it has an associated element that gives an Ailment.
  • Imp Wand: Fire Storm (Burn)
  • Spellbook/Tome of Ice: Ice Storm (Freeze)
  • Spellbook of Lightning: Shock Storm (Shock)
  • Spellbook/Tome of Water, Pearl Staff: Water Storm (Wet)
  • Wild Staff: Chaos Storm (Chaos Effect = all of the above, randomly)
  • Book of Warding: Cleansing Storm (instantaneous, dispels all Buffs in its area)
Splash (May Target Empty)
Has identical icon and text as Splash, which see.
  • You cannot currently distinguish Splash (May Target Empty) from icon or text alone.

B. With weapon attack keyword "Pound", it is identical to T-splash, except for:
  • It may target an empty square.
Use this judiciously to catch unwary foes in its T-splash effect!
  • Troll, Boner, and other monsters that use these weapons can do the same to you!
Area
Area attack is shown as a purple reticule.

  • It affects a 2x3 rectangular region centered on the targeted square.
  • It may target an empty square.
  • Exception: Some attacks are Area, but must target an enemy.
  • It deals full damage to all squares.
C. It matches the text phrase "Target Group", and this is unique.

B. It has weapon attack keywords "Area" and "Volley".
  • In the special case of Area Blast, which matches both the keyword "Area" for Area attack
    and the keyword "Blast" for T-splash, Area attack takes precedence.
  • With keyword "Storm", it also Corrupts all tiles in its area with its element. See Splash (Corrupts Tiles).
Column
Column attack is shown as a vertical blue double-arrow.

  • It affects a 2x1 column.
  • It deals full damage to both squares.
  • It ignores Guard from a shield in the front rank, and still hits the rear target for full damage.
C. It matches the text phrase "Multiple Targets".
  • However, Row and Swipe attacks also use this text phrase.
B. It has attack name keywords "Column", "Penetrating", and "Thrust".
Row
Row attack is shown as a horizontal green double-arrow.
  • However, Swipe attack also uses the same icon.

  • It affects a 1x4 row, either the entire front row or the entire back row.
  • It must target an enemy, not an empty square.
  • It applies full damage to all 4 squares.
C. It matches the text phrase "Multiple Targets".
  • However, Column and Swipe attacks also use this text phrase.
B. Its attack name keyword includes "Row", and this is unique.
Swipe
Swipe attack is shown as a horizontal green double-arrow.
  • However, Row attack also uses the same icon.

  • It affects a 1x3 subset of 1 row, centered on the target.
  • It must target an enemy, not an empty square.
  • The target takes full damage.
  • Its 2 horizontal neighbors take half damage, but full Ailment duration, if any.
C. It matches the text phrase "Multiple Targets".
  • However, Column and Row attacks also use this text phrase.
B. Its attack name keywords include "Cleave", and these special cases:
  • Crude Torch, Ignite
  • Golden Gun, Incendiary Shot
Heavy Attack
Heavy Attack is shown as fire from the sky, lava into the sea, or an artillery blast.

  • Heavy means any attack with -15% Accuracy or worse, with up to +50% base damage.
  • It does not require a perfect roll. It applies all the time, on every attack.
  • It has no splash or area effect.
C. It matches the text phrase "Single Target".

B. It has attack name keywords "Death", "Heavy", and "Mighty".

  • Legendary Fire Sword: Heavy Fire Strike -20%
  • Magic Staff, Greatstaff: Heavy Ray -15%
  • Ice Scepter, Pearl Staff: Heavy Ice/Water Bolt -20%
  • GreatStaff: Death Ray -25%
  • Queen's Longbow (Oak), Giant Bow: Heavy Draw -20%
  • Queen's Longbow (Maple): Heavy Chaos Shot -20%
Notes:
  • Heavy attacks can deal more average damage, if you don't care about their perfect effects.
  • Most Heroes have 80 in their main weapon stat.
  • Then a normal attack averages 0.80 of 1.0x damage, or 0.80 * normal max damage.
  • A Heavy attack with -20% Accuracy has effectively 60 in the weapon stat.
  • Then it can average 0.60 of 1.5x damage, or 0.90 * normal max damage.
  • So the Heavy attack has higher average damage, and higher peak damage on a good roll.
  • However, a Heavy attack is much less likely to roll perfect.

[_] Some attacks have Heavy icon yes, penalty yes, keyword no, and their names are too common to become a keyword.

  • Any 6-skill attack is Heavy?
  • Any Luck attack is Heavy?

[_] Some attacks have Heavy icon no, penalty yes, keywords no.
If these actually do have the Heavy Attack icon, I'll add them as new keywords.
  • Hand Axe: Armor Smash -15%
  • Lesser (/Ice/Lighting) Wand: Magic/Icy/Lightning Missile -15%
  • (Great) Wand: Magic Bolt -25%
[_] Some attacks have Heavy icon no, penalty no, keyword yes.
  • Queen's Longbow (Cedar, Oak, Maple): Heavy Knockback -5%
Ignore Armor
Ignore Armor is shown:
  • in weapon art, as a yellow spike-piercing-shield icon;
  • In combat attack card, as a yellow broken-shield icon.

Ignore Armor is a perfect effect, not a splash pattern.
  • On perfect roll, the target is treated as having 0 Armor vs. Physical Damage.
C. It matches the text phrase "Ignore Armor".
  • However, this is not unique; see Ignore Resistance next.
B. Its attack name keywords include "Pierce", "Shank", "Stab", and "Volley".
Ignore Resistance
Ignore Resistance currently uses identical icon and text as Ignore Armor, which see.

Ignore Resistance is a perfect effect, not a splash pattern.
  • On perfect roll, the target is treated as having 0 Resistance vs. Magic Damage.
C. It matches the text phrase "Ignore Armor".
  • It should say Ignore Resistance. In FtK I, such weapons do exist. In FtK II, not yet?
B. Its attack name keyword is "Zap".

This applies to every Wand with a Zap attack, which deals Magic Damage.
  • Lesser/(normal)/Great Wand: Zap
  • Imp Wand: Fiery Zap
  • Lesser Ice Wand: Icy Zap
  • Lightning Sprig, Lesser Lightning Wand: Lightning Zap
It also applies to all of Toy Warhammer's attacks:

My experience are:
-Swipe attack don't need any target, we can target empty space.
-What about Woodcutter's Justice attack? It target 6 squares, and the front 3 squares are normal damage, and the backline get half damage (Trolls and Jelly Cubes attack).
-Splash support effects have two types: Splash self (like Instruments, Shields), and Splash (Mage weapons).
-Group spells can cast the entire side of the battlefiled.
-Negative accuracy attacks can be easily dodge, because it's less likely perfect. Perfect attack cannot be dodge by enemies, only can dodge by players.
-Enemies only can penetrate physical armor. I doesn't remember any spell armor penetration enemy.
-Enemies get the backline +5% dodge as you, but some giant target cannot be dodge.
-Poison can turn off some abilities on enemies (like clown's Distraction). We can disable Elusive via Poison?

What a massive oversight to not have all of this explained by just pressing shift. The tooltips are a disaster and the encyclopedia isn't very helpful. Thanks for the guide <3

v1.3: Added Splash (Corrupts Tiles); Splash (May Target Empty); and a version log.

To Do: Update card back thumbnails (sigh :)
As of Patch #1.0.22 (11/16), card backs now show:
+ "Physical Damage" in white, or "Magic Damage" in purple, for every attack!
+ "Splash Damage" for all T-splash attacks!
This should fix Lightning Axe (when I see it next).

v1.1: New title page icon.
Added: Heavy Attack (thanks, CrAzYFeAr, my data concur); Ignore Resist.
Formatted: thumbnails floatLeft => inline; [list]s.

in my experience the heavy bow icon is for attacks that have minus accuracy
usually seen on 2 handed weapons and such

whoa thanks !

I think the one with Heavy Bow, mean ignore Line of Sight. I can use that type of bow shooting back target with another unit guarding it in the front.
