Economy
Your main sources of income are taxes, trade, and loot. You can adjust the tax rate of each settlement by clicking on the “Settlements” button at the bottom of the screen. Higher taxes will increase your income, but also lower the happiness of your population. Lower taxes will have the opposite effect.
Trade is another way to generate income. You can trade with other factions by clicking on the “Diplomacy” button at the top of the screen. Then you can select a faction and propose a trade agreement. Trade agreements will increase your income based on the value and quantity of goods you export and import.

Loot is the money you get from raiding or conquering enemy settlements. You can raid enemy settlements by moving your army to their territory and clicking on the “Raid” button at the bottom of the screen. Raiding will reduce the happiness and income of the enemy settlement, but also increase your army’s upkeep cost. You can conquer enemy settlements by besieging them and winning a battle or a siege.

Your main expenses are army upkeep, building maintenance, and bribes. Army upkeep is the cost of maintaining your units. You can see the upkeep cost of each unit by hovering over its icon in the army panel. Building maintenance is the cost of maintaining your buildings in each settlement. You can see the maintenance cost of each building by hovering over its icon in the settlement panel. Bribes are the money you pay to other factions to improve your relations or persuade them to do something.

To improve your economy, you need to invest in your settlements and build economic buildings. Economic buildings are those that increase your income, trade, or population growth. Some examples are markets, farms, ports, and workshops. You can build new buildings by clicking on an empty slot in the settlement panel and choosing a building from the list.
Income and trade
Build (trading post)markets in your settlements. Markets increase your income by generating taxes from your population. They also increase your trade by allowing you to export and import goods with other factions.Build ports in your coastal settlements. Ports increase your income by providing access to sea trade routes. They also increase your trade by allowing you to trade with distant factions and regions.

Improve your relations with other factions. You can improve your relations by sending gifts, proposing alliances, or honoring treaties. You can also improve your relations by completing quests or joining wars against common enemies. Better relations will increase your trade by making other factions more willing to trade with you.

Population Growth
Build farms in your settlements. Farms increase your food production, which in turn increases your population growth. You can see the food production and consumption of each settlement by hovering over its icon on the map.

Build hospitals in your settlements. Hospitals reduce your death rate by providing health care to your population. They also increase your happiness, which reduces the chance of rebellions.

Build churches in your settlements. Churches increase your birth rate by promoting religion and morality among your population. They also increase your happiness and loyalty, which improves your relations with other factions.

Avoid wars and raids. Wars and raids can cause casualties and damage to your population and buildings. They also reduce your happiness and loyalty, which increases the risk of revolts and defections.
