Unfair? I think you mean EASY!
By Sstavix
It’s one of the rarest achievements in Rocket League. You have to equip a topper and win an unfair bot match. It’s supposed to be one of the hardest achievements to get… but is it? Read on, and I’ll tell you how to get that achievement – and a few others – in just a few minutes.

The History
The achievement, Survival of the Fittest, was introduced with the “Revenge of the Battle Cars” update. At that time, you had to equip the shark fin topper and win an unfair bot match. They changed the requirements so that you could have any topper equipped instead, but the challenge still exists.

An unfair match is one in which you are all by yourself, and up against two or three opponents, run by the computer, at the highest difficulty level. It sounds intimidating. It sounds impossible. It sounds…. well, unfair. So how can you possibly win?

I’ll respond with a question of my own – do you prefer Cheddar or Swiss? Because this achievement is easy to get when you apply an abundance of cheese.
The Settings
First of all, choose the car you want to use. This could vary, depending on if you also want to work on other achievements that require the use of a specific car. Then you need to set up an Exhibition Match. That’s pretty easy to do. From the opening menu, go to Play. Choose "Custom Games," and then "Exhibition Match."

When you’re at the menu to set up your match, you’ll have to put in the proper settings. Go ahead and choose to play an unfair, 2 vs 1 match (why set it for 3 vs 1 when you’re just after the achievement?). Then, go into the "Mutator" settings and choose "1 goal." The other settings in Mutator don't really matter for this achievement, so don't touch anything else.

There’s one more setting to choose – and that’s where the “cheese” comes in. Set the game mode to “Heatseeker.”

What Heatseeker mode does is transform the soccar ball into a bouncing, heat seeking missile. When a car hits the ball, that ball will transform into that team’s color… and then home in on the opposing team’s goal. It’s difficult to stop when it’s in midair and, when you’re playing a 1 vs 2 match with only one goal to determine the winner, the ball will always drop in a place where you will be able to hit it first. Accelerate as you approach the ball and, before you hit, jump into the air. It could also help to tip your car forward slightly so you strike it with your hood or front – this should launch the ball into the air and make it a bit harder to deflect.

Typically what the computer will do is leave one car behind to play goalie while sending the other to attack. So it may take a few tries before you manage to win a game – perhaps as many as 15 to 20. But since the first goal scored is what determines the winner, the games will be very short. If you lose, simply start the game again with the same settings and give it another go.

Easy Enough! But You Mentioned Other Achievements….
I certainly did. By using Heatseeker mode we can take care of at least two more achievements. Those are Savage and Spectacular. And while you’re at it, you can also get Ruthless at the same time. All three of these achievements were introduced by the “Chaos Run” DLC / update. Savage requires you to score goals against pro-level bots or higher while using Ripper, and Spectacular requires you to do the same with either Merc or Grog. Since you’re playing on Steam, all of these cars should have been unlocked for you automatically when Psyonix made the game free to play… which was the same time they removed it from the Steam store. So these achievements will be easier for Steam players, but tougher for those on other platforms, who may have to jump through a few hoops (or shell out some money) to get the right cars.

Hey, I didn’t make the game, just this guide. Don’t blame me for what Psyonix did.

In any case, we’re going to continue the cheesiness of “Heatseeker” mode, but ramp it up with a few more slices. Go back into the match settings and make a few changes. This time we want to change the opponents to only one car (why make it harder than we need to?) and lower the difficulty to “Pro.” Go ahead and change the arena to whatever you’d like – there are a few achievements that require you to play on specific arenas, so why not work on those cheevos at the same time? And then it comes time to add some more cheese to our pile of cheese.

Note that the achievement doesn’t specify that you have to win the game – you only need to score goals (or, in the case of Ruthless, make shots-on-goal). So let’s head into the Mutator settings and change the number of goals to “unlimited” and change the match timer to "unlimited" as well.

You’ll find that, just like before, the ball will drop in a location where you’ll be able to get it easily and, with only one opponent, you’ll be able to easily score the goal by hitting it above your opponent’s car. The game mode should take care of the rest. For the second point, though, the ball will drop where your opponent will be able to get to it first. This will be a good opportunity for you to work on your defense, or if you want, just chill for a few seconds and let your opponent easily score. Remember that you are not after the win (there won’t be a winner in a game that never ends), you only want to score a goal. Just keep going back and forth until the achievement pops for you.

Once you get 10 goals with your chosen car, end the match. Change the car you’re using to the other one, and start a new game. Then repeat the process. Once you get that other achievement, you can simply continue going back and forth until Ruthless pops as well… or drop the bot difficulty lower to make it even easier.
What's Next?
As long as you’re at it, consider a bunch of the other achievements you can get with this tactic. These include Metaverse (win a match on the Starbase ARC with the Ion Rocket Boost or the Halo Topper), Sea Turtle (score a goal while on your back in the Aquadome) or Mad Scientist (play a complete match in 3 different Rocket Lab arenas). Since you’re likely playing on Steam, you should have everything you need to get these achievements – now it’s just a matter of going through the motions to get them. And this guide should work for other platforms as well, including Epic Games. The hardest part would probably be making sure you have the correct cars and/or accessories to meet the requirements of the achievement.

Heatseeker mode may not have been added to make achievements easier, but it sure doesn’t hurt. While I wouldn’t use it for normal gameplay, I certainly found it to be the perfect tool to get some of the rarest achievements in the game.

If you found this guide helpful, please give it a thumbs-up. And Steam points are always welcome, too! Thank you for reading, and happy gaming!
