Intro
So, you want to defeat nightmare Charles huh!

Well then, I recommend checking out this video:
https://youtu.be/ur_sTJdlf1I

However, if you prefer reading, then read on friend!
Preperation
Starting off, lets go over what is needed before the first fight.
Level 5 in ALL stats (yes, that includes speed)
Bug Spray (yes, its still broken even after being nerfed)
Also, just a heads up, this will work regardless of RNG (ie. no need for boxes of scrap to spawn)

Small update to the guide, Charles has a grace period when you first start the game. This means that so long as your early game is somewhat optimized, you shouldn't need to worry about Charles until after Lizbeth Murkwater's quest. If you find yourself getting killed in the lake, then hasten up your early game.

1) As soon as Eugene gets killed, continue forward and take a left at the intersection. As you pass it, make sure to flip the switch.
2) Make your way to Tony Tiddle and do his quest. This will give you 9 scrap.
3) Once your back to your train, upgrade your speed twice.
4) Back up to the intersection and then go right till you reach Candice.
5) Do Candice's quest to get 9 more scrap.
6) Go behind Candice's house and head to Lizbeth Murkwater
7) Do Lizbeth's quest. Don't forget the loose scrap in her house, on the dock, and the two on the island.
8) Make your way back to the train and upgrade your speed to level 5. From here, with any scrap you get, upgrade either of the other upgrades till they are level 5.
9) Make your way to Daryl to get the lock picks. There are 6 loose scrap you should grab:
One in each of the containers, one behind the house on a table, one in the camp behind his house, and one inside the house.
10) Do Daryl's quest.
11) Here is where you will need to start worrying about Charles. If you hear the whistle, wait him out inside a house.
12) Once its safe, make your way to Helen and get the quest for the first egg. Make sure to grab the scrap on her deck as well as the three in the covered area. You can also hide there if Charles comes.
13) Make your way to Sgt. Flint and do the quest for Bug Spray. Make sure to grab the 5 loose scrap you can find:
One in front of the fence on the path, one on the stairs, one to the left of the water tower, one in the burning house, and one in front of Flints house.

From here, you should have everything you need as well as some backup scrap.
First Fight (As well as any other fight)
Here is how the fight will go down:
Use Bug Spray in SMALL bursts. It should be cooling down more then its burning up when using it.
When Charles get far away for any reason, he will build up momentum. Use Bug Spray till it is as red as can be before over heating. That should prevent him from hitting your train. After that, ease up and let it cool while still shooting the occasional burst just to keep him burning and slowed.
If you begin outrunning him (more common once you have more speed) aim the bursts of fire at the tracks. This will slow him down enough that he can't hit the train before getting back into a stun lock.
If he DOES hit through the fire and blacks out your train (its rare, but it happened to me once) then overheat Bug Spray, run over and repair your train to max, then return and get bug spray bright red. This should allow you to get your speed back and make some ground so you can continue the fight as normal.

If you have extra scrap from lucky boxes, then I recommend putting it into speed. This will decrease the chances of Charles hitting you through the fire damage.
Getting the Eggs (and other missions)
There isn't too much to say here. You got through the hardest part, but this is permadeath so here are a few more things to note:
  • The cultists do 3 times more damage which is almost enough to one shot you. Be very careful and if you get chased, your better off trying to get back to your train.
  • This goes without being said, but make sure you are very familiar with each of the caves so you don't get cornered by a cultist.
  • If you are going to do a quest, make sure you either recently warded off Charles or there is shelter VERY close by. Being on foot is what will get you killed late game.
  • Just because he left you doesn't mean he was "warded off". He will let out a roar which means that he will actively avoid you. This is your time to do missions and such.

Now, lets get on to the last part of this guide...
The Boss Fight
First off, congratulations making it this far. I am sure it wasn't easy, but you made it.

Your going to fight him the same way you have been fighting him. The major difference is his teleportation. Normally, this wasn't too much of an issue in classic mode, but here, it can be a big issue namely because if he teleports far away, it gives him a chance to build up speed which as you have probably seen at this point, can be dangerous. Start repairing your train after he teleports and if you have less then 30% health left. By doing this, he should only get one hit in before your able to slow him down. Otherwise he will probably get two or three in.

With that out of the way, lets talk about your train and prep:
1) I recommend you have your speed maxed out. Its going to make it easier to stop him after he builds up speed after he teleports.
2) Armor isn't as important as speed, but I do recommend it. He is most likely going to hit you at LEAST once during this fight (maybe just by teleporting on top of you) and having the armor is going to save you on scrap which leads directly to...
3) Have roughly 30 scrap for repairs. This should be plenty for the fight.
4) If you have more then 30, then I recommend upgrading your train.

Other then that, good luck!

If you have any questions or new tips, I will happily update the guide.

@Chaos Monk, You have a grace period in the beginning where Charles can't attack you. If you are getting attacked while doing the witch quest, then you need to optimize your early game.

Charles can swim (Murkwater Witch Quest). Going out to the island is a deadly mission if he spawns. He will quickly paddle out to you with no escape.

From my experience you need at least 50-60 scrap for repairing in the last fight. Also I believe it is better to keep your upgrades around lvl 8-9 and keep the remaining scrap for more repairs due to how expensive the highes level upgrades are.

Something for early game:
You can jump out of your train on your way to Candice to run to Tony, Lizbeth (which lets you pick up a few extra scrap around the swamp), then to Candice. You can upgrade to level 7 speed and get to Daryl for the lockpick
There's 2 extra scrap in the junkyard and if all of this is done fast enough you'll have time to go to the house by the coast down the path next to the junk yard before Charles spawns for 14 extra scrap
This will likely cause a few resets however because Charles will have spawned back in by this time making the run back a killer but it's early enough that getting back to this point isn't too bad if he does get you and if he doesn't, you're looking at a solid amount of scrap that can help

Also, if you want to cheese things a bit, the place where you find Theodore is a safe zone. Charles is programed to leave when you're under it but you can keep luring him back and shooting him until he flees, giving you time to do the surrounding missions

Heya!! I'm trying for this achievement and have a question- aside from speed, which stats should I prioritize? My instinct is defense but I've seen others prioritize attack instead. Which helped you more on your runthroughs of nightmare?
