You can tell that Svetozar is lying because Austro-Hungary had food shortages during the entirety of the Italian front and resorted to stealing from villages.

I love this meme, but, Austro Hungarian forces were some of the most kind fighters, Especially under Karl the 1st, a man so nice, he collapsed the empire for the sake of humanity, They put heavy restrictions on gas weapons, had extreme rules on distinguishing civilian and army positions, and if you look at Italian regiments that were captured at Capporetto, they were provided wine, fresh bread, and other lovely accommodations, except bedding, there were too many, but still many of these things were impossible for a soldier to get but a normal prisoner could expect this treatment, if it wasn't for Italian nationalism, i think there would be captured Italian auxiliaries. But the isonzo yes was the most brutal when it came to loss of life and conditions, but the preservation of land is amazing, but much of this changed when german high command rolled up.

As brutal as the first world war could possibly get after all. But one characteristic was that they absolutely loathed the Italians. It was the only front where casual talk between both sides, ceasefires and the "live and let live" idea didn't exist- The defence in 1915 was largely held by Austrian and Slovenian civilians taking up arms to defend their homelands, making them absolutely despise the Spaghettis.
The Italians famously thought that the "Irredenti", – Italians living inside the empire – would switch sides and aid them, only to be met with fierce resistance from their supposed brothers. And the Italian attack also riled up the adriatic slavs in the empire so much that they now actually wanted to die for it.
So yeah, the whole k.u.k. army was in no small part held together by their collective hatred for the Italians.

So whats the context, were Austro Hungarians really brutal toward the Italians or something?
