A couple of suggestions:
* Build the spire and level up your snare spell to the max.
* Build the Spawning Pool and upgrade your Undead to the max.
This way you'll increase your chances of capturing it faster while minimizing the chance for the monster to escape.

Although I used a little trick that I do not see in this guide : if the triton is on land, clean up enough space around him to build a kennel on top of his head. It will be captured automatically.
