Military Loadout Guide
Uniform Setup
Set the uniform to:
- Replace clothing
- Exact matches only

Recommended Gear:
  • Bodywear: Mail Shirt
  • Headwear: Helm
  • Legwear: Bone Greaves (or Metal Greaves if using Low Boots)
  • Handwear: Gauntlets
  • Footwear: High Boots (Low Boots if necessary)
  • Shield: Wood or Leather (avoid metal)
  • Weapon: See Weapon Choices section
  • Backpack: Leather
  • Waterskin: Leather

Optional (for trained dwarves):
- Steel Breastplate — Add once Armor User skill is decent

---

Weapon Choices

Spear
- Accurate, armor-piercing, and lightweight
- Best vs living enemies
- Avoid against undead — doesn't dismember effectively

Axe
- Excellent all-purpose weapon
- Great vs undead and armored enemies
- Cutting weapons shine when out-tiering armor; most enemies wear iron or worse, so steel dominates

Tip: Use a mix of weapon types in different squads for better coverage

---

Training Tips

- Group squads by weapon type
- Ensures proper sparring and faster skill growth
- Mixed-weapon squads train slower due to mismatched instructors

This will generate work orders for all surface, farming and industry.
Delete all work orders except rock Blocks/Mechanism/Cage/Minecarts and and specify the material used.
quickfort orders library/dreamfort.csv -n "/surface2, /surface3, /surface4, /surface5, /surface6, /surface7, /surface8, /farming2, /farming3, /industry2, /industry3"

Additional Tips
Creating Shortcuts
In your file explorer where dwarf fortress is installed go to: Dwarf Fortress\dfhack-config\init
open the file with notepad: dfhack.init
Example adding the keybinding for gui/control-panel: keybinding add Ctrl-Shift-1 gui/control-panel

https://docs.dfhack.org/en/stable/docs/tools/keybinding.html#keybinding

assign your dwarfs to mining using the y menu
mining super important. make those picks ASAP assign dwarfs as miners.
hauling super important. make those wheel barrows ASAP
don't be shy of making more than 1 workshop. Personally I have 10 smelters and stone workers
Setting up food is incredibly important

Labor>Kitchen remove plump helm's from cooking

Voice attack is amazing and it allows you record actions really fast. Like turning ASCII on/off, searching stockpiles and clicking the search box with 1 action.

A quick way to have stockpiles with bins is to create 1x1 stockpiles. To make it easier use the blueprint and quickfort command to make quick stockpiles with preset filters.

rock pots are a good replacement for wooden barrels.

Parley's must be handled carefully and save every season. Lock your mayor to no professions, and this may not be enough as if the dwarf is going to the task, but decides to go eat while on the way this can break down the Parley and cause a fight.

set autobutcher to NEW f10, m10, F10, M2

embark:
6/7 Proficient miner (crucial)
6/7 Proficient planter (crucial)
1/7 Proficient brewer (crucial)
1/7 Proficient cook (labor menu)

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm not sure if this has been patched so I'll play it safe and stick with bins... Again; thanks for the great guide.

It's been a while since I've played Dwarf fortress, but in a previous version if a seed bag with seeds was stored inside of a barrel those individual seeds were inaccessible by dwarfs resulting in nothing being planted.

Forgive my asking; why no barrels in the seed stockpile? (I'm new and have been using barrels, so I feel like I've goofed a bit). Fantastic guide!

Thanks. I've learned a lot since updating this guide again. I'll be adding more later on.

Revamped the guide to those interested. Also added a Stockpile settings. Keep in mind you don't have to everything at once.
