I think you can add an extra tip that is very useful and solve the issue you mention : "I had my character's turn order before the NPC who had one last ladder to climb on the final turn. ( I dont know how to wait or lose place in initiative order)."
Your characters do not need to climb the last ladder to escape alive, they just need to be in the room that has the ladder leading to the submarine.
This mean if you need an NPC playing after your character to take a last tunr to get out, just park your character in the last room before the submarine and finish your turn, let the NPC run free, and your character will automatically board from the last room anyway.
