Scharnhorst-Class Battleships

Here is the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, 2 battleships of the German Navy during WW2.

Both ships were built in 1935-1936, and finally entering service in 1939. They were the first German captial ships completed in Germany after WW1 (and thus were the first battleships built for ♥♥♥♥ Germany). Although they were called battleships by the Germans, the British rated them as battlecruisers due to their high speeds and small caliber guns (for a battleship). When war broke out, Scharnhorst and Gneisenau served most of their careers hunting down allied convoys. Some of their notable actions in their service included the sinking of HMS Rawalpindi off Iceland, the sinking of the carrier HMS Glorious during Operation Weserübung (the German invasion of Denmark and Norway), and Operation Cerberus, where the 2 ships along with other units of the German Navy made a mad dash through the English Channel. In 1942, Gneisenau was heavily damaged by British aircraft while in port, and plans to repair and rearm her with newer guns were cancelled. Her hull remained unused for the entire duration of the war, until 1945 when she was sunk as a blockship in Gotenhafen, finally being scrapped in 1951. Scharnhorst was deployed for operations in Norway in 1943 to hunt allied convoys heading to the Soviet Union. In December of that year, she was sunk by the Royal Navy during the Battle of North Cape, the last battle between British and German battleships.
