The secret is the paintover. I took a raw SFM render, which I put into PhotoShop. Over there I try to think, what the average colour is in a certain area, such as face, torso, bandalier, trousers etc. If I have to describe the style, it is cartoony, using the cel-shading, which is a use of one simple colour for the shadow, instead of a a gradient.
