The Monster Inside is a noir visual novel in which you play as a private investigator exploring a string of unnatural murders & disappearances, all whilst questioning your own sanity and combating your inner demons.

Chapter 1 introduces our protagonist, Jack, and his prospective client, Lilly. After hearing her story & concerns, Jack accepts Lilly's case to search for Mr. Farnsworth (the banker) who has gone missing (and who's wife was found dead in Central Park 2 days prior). The chapter ends with Jack heading to Central Park to investigate the circumstances of Mrs. Farnsworth's death and Mr. Farnsworth's disappearance.

Chapter 2 begins with Jack investigating Central Park. He senses a familiar feeling (seduction), and begins his investigation.

TASK: Investigate the muddy footprints and the burn marks on the tree.

👣 Muddy Footprints:

Jack takes note of Mr. Farnsworth's footprints in the mud, which seem to indicate he was present the night of Mrs. Farnsworth's death and walked away freely from the scene.

🌳 Tree Markings:

Jack recognizes the burn marks on the tree as being caused by ancient magic & something unnatural.

Finding no other clues, Jack concludes his investigation at the park and heads to his apartment.

Chapter 3 begins with Lilly arriving at Jack's office for an update on his investigation into her case. After discussing the Farnsworths, Lilly notifies Jack that the Police Chief's wife, Mrs. Amato, was found dead at the docks (presumably murdered). In light of this new information, the chapter concludes with Jack heading to the docks to investigate Mrs. Amato's death.

Chapter 4 begins with Jack arriving at the docks and sensing the same feeling of seduction that was noted at Mrs. Farnsworth's scene; thus, he begins investigating the docks for evidence.

TASK: Investigate the cigarettes and the small piece of purple fabric.

🚬 Cigarettes:
Jack recognizes the cigarettes as Red Phoenix cigarettes, the same brand he smokes.

🟪 Purple Fabric:
Jack finds a small piece of purple fabric near the lightpost, which is often only worn by royalty or members of high society.

The chapter concludes with Jack pulling out his cigarettes to smoke while watching the waves at the docks to ease his mind of his self-related concerns.

Chapter 5 begins with Jack's mental stability unraveling as he questions his own sanity. In the midst of his introspection, Jack notices the newspaper and its latest headline that the Mayor has gone missing and his wife found dead in an alley. Lilly visits Jack for an update on her case, but he cuts the conversation short to rush to the latest crime scene.

Chapter 6 begins with Jack arriving at the alley to investigate Mrs. Vinetti's death.

TASK: Investigate the dumpster and Vinetti's car.

🗑️ Dumpster:
While investigating the dumpster, Jack finds various documents evidencing that Mayor Vinetti is corrupt and was colluding with Police Chief Amato.

🚗 Vinetti's Car:
Jack suspects that Mayor Vinetti may also be dead, as it wouldn't have made sense for him to leave his vehicle in the alley and flee on foot.

While exiting the alleyway, Jack finds a watch (that is revealed to be his). The chapter ends with Jack fleeing the alley with great concern over his mental stability and own inner demons.

Chapter 7 begins with Jack revealing the killer (Lilly, who is revealed to be a succubus) and their plan (to get Jack, who is revealed to be an incubus, to help her breed). The chapter and game concludes with Jack trapping the killer inside his office mirror.
