Welcome to the guide!
The Basics
READ THIS BEFORE CONTINUING
There's a new tool called Overstrike. It lets you install mods and suits with only one program.
Install this and download the NET Runtime that they want you to install.

So Retron you say, how am I supposed to know where to download everything?
To that I say, NexusMods is your friend!
NexusMods offers thousands of modifications for this game and they all are incredible, I will go over all of the different types of mods as well as recommended mods and users that I think deserve more love. At the end of this guide, your game will be your own unique experience!

It is really simple, create an account on NexusMods and find the category for Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered
Did you find it? Good, on to the next step!
Find any modification that you would like to install, now obviously this can take some time since there are so many. The "Hot Mods" are always at the top, that category shows what the most downloaded mods are as of recent and this can be a great help right from the get go.
This gets updated regularly as new mods release for the game.

Now onto the next step!

Let's say that I wanted to download just a regular mod that changes the sky to a different color.
I just select the mod and click on the second category on the page.
Select Manual Download and afterwards Slow Download.

Next thing that you're gonna want to do is either install 7-Zip or WinRar. I prefer using WinRar because I find it simpler to use and I have more experience with that software.
You need to install them because the files on NexusMods are a compressed zip.

Download link for WinRar: https://www.win-rar.com/start.html?&L=16
Download link for 7-Zip: https://www.7-zip.org/
This is what it should look like once you downloaded one of two options and once you downloaded a mod.

Now you can clearly see a little folder icon next to the download, you just click on it and drag it onto your desktop.
Once that is done, extract the ".zip" or ".rar" onto your desktop and now you should see a ".smpcmod" file, this is the extension of the mods.
Don't worry about my file having a GIMP Photoshop icon, it is because I have GIMP installed.

JediJosh's Modding Tool
Onto the next section of this guide.
What you need to do is install the Modding Tool created by JediJosh920.
Download link: https://www.nexusmods.com/marvelsspidermanremastered/mods/51?tab=description

The next step is VERY IMPORTANT.
Once you download the tool, you will get up to four files.
Create a folder on your desktop and name it whatever but do not forget to place all 4 files in that same folder .
Now you might be wondering why there are more than four files in my folder. We will get to that soon enough.

Okay, now open up the "smpctool.exe". If you have done all of the steps correct, you should see a that the tool asks you for an "asset archive" folder. That folder is located in where you have downloaded your game from Steam. Here is a picture to the path of where it is.

Now it is simple, select the folder from the picture above. You should see a category "Mod Manager" in the tool, click on that and click on add. Most people do not place their mods in a folder so I suggest to place your mods in the same folder that you created for the modding tool. If you want an even better folder, create a subfolder called "Mods" and place all of your mods in there.

Once you have selected the modification that you want, you can check the mod and press Install Mods To Game but be sure to check the box next to it or else it will not have been installed!

The reason why my UI looks different is because I have a tweaked version of the tool that adds more features such as dragging and dropping mods onto the tool for easy installation and being able to check all of the mods at once.

Download link: https://www.nexusmods.com/marvelsspidermanremastered/mods/2875

Before installing this, be sure to install JediJosh's version and then replace that "smpctool.exe" with the tool from Jord, also be sure to drag the other file(s) that came with it in the same folder or else it will not work.

Suit Adding Tool and Suit Name Importer (OPTIONAL)
Remember how I told you that there were multiple extensions?
Well, this is another extension called ".suit" and it is a bit easier to install if you previously installed the modding tool by either JediJosh or Jord.
First off, what you're gonna want to do is install the Suit Adding Tool by ASCTheWhiteWolf. A huge shoutout to them or else this wasn't even possible at all.
Download link: https://www.nexusmods.com/marvelsspidermanremastered/mods/2318?tab=description

This tool makes it so that suits do not replace any existing suit which was the case with the other tool. Do keep in mind that the different files are not compatible with each other or with Miles Morales! This means that if you want to install a suit from the Spider-Man Remastered page into Miles Morales, it will not work unless the creator also made it available for Miles Morales.

In the description there are two requirements that you need to install first, otherwise when trying to open the Suit Adding Tool, it will not open at all.

Download link for VC Redist x64: https://aka.ms/vs/17/release/vc_redist.x64.exe
Download link for .NET Desktop Runtime: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/thank-you/runtime-desktop-6.0.9-windows-x64-installer

If you have installed both of them, create a folder on your desktop and place the tool in there along with your ".suit" files. It is very important to keep this tool seperate from the SMPCTool, I recommend to create one folder for the Suit Adding Tool and a different one for the SMPCTool.

Drag a .suit file onto the tool and it will ask you for the language, type the abreviation into the command prompt and press ENTER. Select the asset archive folder again, it is the same deal as with the other tool.
If you have done it correctly, this is what the tool should do while adding a suit.
The Suit Name importer works the same way but you don't have to reinstall the requirements. If you do not choose to install the Suit Name Importer tool, every suit will say "J. Jonah Jameson" or "May Parker". If you do choose to and you did it right, every suit will have the name that the creator of the suit gave to it.
One thing that I do have to mention is that everyone has a limit, this depends from person to person on how many suits they can add. My game can handle up to 82 installed suits but it crashes at 83. No worries, I will also help you with troubleshooting in this guide.

Oh and before I forget, when installing mods after installing suits, they will disapear so you will have to reinstall the suits again. Don't worry, you can just drag and drop them onto the tool and they will appear again.
Suit Menu (RECOMMENDED)
So there has been a new breakthrough! Thanks to Tkachov, a talented scripter.
People are now able to easily add suits through the use of a very intuitive UI. You can even remove suits from the base game that you don't like.
This is what it looks like for me.

There is no black outline to show you what suit you have *Just want to make it more visible* selected to either remove or switch to another location.
Yes, this is now also possible. Just drag the icon of the suit to where ever you want and it will stay that way in-game.

The following options are now available:
- Switching suit icon places
- Switching suit icons
- Switching models
- Easily add and remove suits

All you have to do for this to work is download the tool and place it in the same folder as your suit adding tool.
Do be aware that you first have to install the suits using the suit adding tool for it to work. The troubleshooting section of the guide still applies to this.
I've tried to remove every base suit from the game and the result was that the game still crashed for me when I tried to add one more suit above my maximum amount.

Anyways, this is what it looks like for me after removing the base game suits for me. This is not a glitch, it is just something that happens when you remove any suit because the game can't find the name nor the icon for it.
Other than that, it works very well and I higly recommend to use it! Yes, it even works with suit replacers.

Reshade (OPTIONAL)
Alrighty then!
You want to spice up the look of your game?
Well, this section of the guide will tell you how to.
First, install Reshade, I will have a download link for that program below.
Download link: https://reshade.me/
Download link for version 4.9.1: https://reshade.me/forum/general-discussion/7811-4-9-1-where-i-can-download-it

To set it up, just select the game and check all of the boxes, this can be done easily by selecting "Uncheck All" and then select "Check All". And before I forget, select DirectX9.

Why am I recommending a version that's not up to date? Some shaders were made for that version in mind, the recent version can break those shaders.
Anyways, install a shader that you want, for me it would be this one.
Once you have installed Reshade and you have the shader that you want, just place the .ini in the root of the game, this can be done easily by clicking "Browse Local Files" when right clicking the game in your library.

Now when opening a game, the menu should pop up and it will tell you to open the "Home" key. That key can be found next to the DEL key.

Now you can just select the shader by clicking the arrows
Is the shader not to your liking? You can even adjust it to your liking. To also make it easier, there are hotkeys that you can map in the settings of the Reshade menu when you have the game open.

To uninstall Reshade, there are 4 different ways. The easiest way is to open up the ReshadeSetup.exe again and repeating the same steps as installing. It will now ask you to update, repair or uninstall. Obviously you need to press uninstall. To remove a shader, just delete the shader from your asset archive.
Installing A Save File (OPTIONAL)
Alright, so you want to cheat huh?! Or maybe you have already played the game so many times that you just want to free roam.
Installing save files is luckily the easiest part.
Just go to NexusMods and find a save file by the key words "save" ; "100" or "level select".
There might be multiple files, depending on which one you have downloaded.
The file will have a ".save" extension, you can just drag and drop every file a subfolder for the game in your documents. It should be a folder with some random numbers.
Now you should see a 100% save file in the game, you might even unlock all of the achievements.
Last But Not Least!
I hope this guide was informative and helped you understand how to spice up your game!
The modding community for this game is amazing and I will list some very talented people that I have come across:
- ChanceofRayne
- TangoTeds
- AgroFro
- Reza825
- Princec23 And all the other modders out there!

This modification released just a few days ago, I've never seen a better swinging mod. I highly recommend it!

Another modification that I recommend is the Prowler Definitive Reshade, came out today and this has got to be my favorite Reshade.

This suit made by Piqo goes very well with the Reshade mod!

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Overhaul

While we Steam and Epic Games users wait for Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the modding community already has us covered. Turning the game into the sequel.
I linked iVoltex's video because this is the closest that I could find regarding a MSM2 overhaul.
All modifications are linked in the description of the video and again, huge shoutout to iVoltex!
Troubleshooting
The Solutions:

- Does the modding tool say that you have no TOC file? Verify the integrity of the game on Steam after delete the toc files from the asset archive folder, toc files are essential because they make the game boot up. No toc, no luck.

- Does the game crash? This has to do with a few reasons, maybe even all three at once! First of you, need to install a new save file, this can help since the suit adding tool might've corrupted the save file. You need to delete all of your files in your save files folder for this which isn't nice but it's the only way. If that's not the case, I recommend you to copy every file in your saves folder and keep it somewhere safe before REPLACING it with a new save file from NexusMods!
It can also be the fault of the toc, install a new save file along with new toc files.
If all of the above did not work, delete the "Suits" folder from your asset archive and do all of the above again.

- Does the game simply work without modifications but not with? Repeat all of the steps above but press install in the modding tool.

- To uninstall, simply select the mod that you wish to uninstall and press Install Mods To Game because if you just delete the mods without uninstalling, it'll give the same results as mentioned above.

this is over complicating the whole process, Cloutifiy's video on YouTube was more helpful, still thank you for helping me with getting started

@bye spencer I did that exact thing but I just can't seem to get the name to appear. Interestingly, there was no "names.txt" in the main game folder. Can you help me out?

@bye spencer can you help guiding the rename suits thing more detail please? Maybe a video !! I tend to get annoyed with the awesome suits from modders but they always have the name May Parker and J. Jonah Jameson all over them. And thank you to @Retron518 for making this section a very helpful and detailed guide on steam!!

@bye spencer, this is something that I am aware of. However, someone in the modding server responded to me that it's basically looking into the game files of the creator and editing things which is disrespectful. This is why I did not mention it in the guide. However, I am glad that you did mention it.
ibuyusednames 16 Jul, 2023 @ 11:38pm
Not every modder added a name to their suit. So, you can make your own "name.txt" file and type in your own suit name inside the .txt file, then drop the .txt file into the "suitmod.suit" file using 7zip or WinRAR alongside "id.txt". To update the in-game suit titles, delete all text in the "names.txt" file within the main game folder. Run Suit Name Importer like above and voila.

If some suits cause your game to crash, it could be one of 2 things: any of yours saves are attached to an old game version, or your page file size is too small.
