Before they slapped ads on everyone's video, even those today that don't have any copyrighted music, in the old days if the video you made was popular enough, and you had enough views regularly on your channel, you used to be able to monetize off youtube, provided it met their community standards and wouldn't have any copyrighted music disqualifying you from monetary gain generated by ad revenue. While this made some income for uploaders, this was still not necessarily a day job replacement for those I came across offline who were successful at this.
