Fushimi Inari-Taisha (World Wonder)

Fushimi Inari-Taisha, located on Mount Inari in Kyoto, is the most important of tens of thousands of shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto deity of rice and harvests. This Shinto shrine is believed to have been constructed in 711 and became the object of imperial patronage during the Heian Period; legends say Emperor Junna fell into sickness as he ordered the cutting of a divine tree in Mount Inari, so he granted divine title to the deity and patronage to the shrine. The highlight of the shrine is Senbon Torii, literally thousands of torii gates, with entire trails lined by densely erected vermillion torii gates. These torii gates were donated by merchants and worshippers to show their gratitude for the blessings of the deity, and the custom dates back to the Edo Period.
