i use gimp to make my normal maps with alpha channel

ive been wondering for the longest time and i think nows a pretty good time to ask since you're back now, but whats your method for making textures? like the shirt fabric and such, though i guess it can all just be stock images, that's mostly just what i use and then editing layers in paint.net
one main thing i wanna know, how do you make normal maps? i've tried before and it's never came out properly as far as im aware. looking at normals the game uses they're always at like 5% opacity, i dont know if its meant to be that way or not but i'd like to know if you have a specific method or not!
