This xp farm is similar to the Hive Mother combat xp farms. However, the main difference is most pets have ranged attacks, there for killing the boss which you don't want since it spawns mobs that you can turn into juicy xp.
There is a way to make the ranged pets stop attacking the Hive Mother.

This video guide is 2 minutes long since it is really easy to set up.

The slime bosses have a chance to drop one, you can buy one from the miner guy, or find them are a rare drop in boxes or digging spots.

The owls do not attack no, they only provide buffs to the player.

Better stats yes, but pets also have skills and every 2 levels you earn skill points (at max that means you get a total of 5 skill points) Which skills a pet has are random so its worth looking for multiple as the right skills can make them really strong.
