how to get a rod ?
  • buy a fishing rod & both sorts of bait at the Fishing Shop's cash register

preparation before fishing
  1. Hold fishing rod in Hand

  2. click Use with the Bait

casting the rod
  1. hold RT & LT at the same time in the direction of water

  2. RT indicates the length of your line & how far your float will land in water

  3. sometimes you are unable to cast the rod, then change Abrill's position & repeat until the float lands on water

actually fishing
  1. when you see a splash, hit short LT, that hooks the fish
    • often you are unable to hook the fish, or the fish got away despite, in the latter case you lose the bait

  2. when the fish is actually hooked, on the right of the screen you see two bars
    • that on the right (green) is the rod's line
    • that on the left (blue) is the fish's strength
    • i've simplified the description of the bars cause in game it's more complicated than it needs to be

  3. the fish starts struggling immediately
    • tap only lightly RT to reel gently & keep an eye on the bars,
      so your line bar (green) does go down AS LITTLE as possible

  4. when the fish stops struggling, reel constantly in but keep an eye for a second round of struggle
    • if needed repeat 3.

  5. usually you have now caught the fish, congrats

you sure can use a mouse & keyboard. the procedure is as described, you get some help on screen when fishing.
i still recommend to anybody playing this game or any exploration game in open world to use a controller, it's way more convenient & smooth.

I'm on a laptop and can't fish with a trackpad. What a waste of 1000 coins. I don't have a controller, so should I use a mouse?

yes, it is a short time you have. wait for the splash & hit LT.
sometimes it works even if you are a bit too late. it's a question of training & experience with how it works. just try to succeed.

I cannot seem to hook the fish. Is it such short time my reflexes suck or am I doing something wrong?
