Introduction
Eidolon is a low-key survival exploration game where threats to your health are actually very uncommon. Staying alive is extremely easy, particularly once you've located the fishing rod.

This guide will go over some easy things you can do do maintain your health while you search the environment for clues about the past.

Food
There are prety much only four crucial resources in Eidolon: tinder, fish, mushrooms, and blackberries. These are the most common and easiest-to-obtain food-related items; everything else is optional.

Bear in mind that berries and mushrooms will go bad if you don't eat them fast enough. Don't over-forage either of these resources, or you'll just waste your time.

TINDER

Tinder is necesarry to start fires. It can only be found in thick forests, where it will appear on the ground as abunch of short brown sticks. Many forests in Eidolon, strangely enough, contain no tinder whatsoever. Whenever you see tinder, pick it up!

You will need to start fires in order to cook meat and avoid sickness. Sometimes, it's a good idea to conserve tinder by cooking a lot of meat at once. Keep your tinder stores in mind whenever you're fishing or hunting.

FISH

Fish is the easiest-to-obtain meat in Eidolon. It can be caught from any body of blue water, including ponds, rivers, and the sea. You will need a fishing pole to collect it.

When you begin the game, head down the hill toward the lake. you will be very close to a flashing white dot. This is the fishing pole. Walk over it to pick it up.

In Eidolon, you will rarely be far away from a body of water. Fishing is so easy that you can probably subsist on fish alone, if necesarry. I like to have at least four fish with me at all times. When you wake up after sleeping, you will be hungry enough to eat one fish. An easy-to-maintain diet consists of a fish in the morning and snacks of berries or mushrooms throughout the day.

Never eat raw fish. Light a fire and cook it to avoid sickness.

MUSHROOMS

Unlike real life, the mushrooms in Eidolon are safe to eat. Pick them up whenever you see them and munch on them throughout the day. Sleeping overnight will make you hungry enough to eat around forty mushrooms.

Mushrooms are one of the most geographically widespread foodstufs in Eidolon. You will find them in ruined cities, in forests, in open fields-- pretty much everywhere. There are so many mushrooms in some areas of the map that you could easily live on mushrooms alone, if you had to.

BLACKBERRIES

Blackberries are the most common berry fruit in Eidolon. They grow on bushes dotted across the map. You can tell that a bush has blackberries on it if it's covered in small black dots. Once you harvest berries from a bush, they will take a while to grow back.

Blackberries are extremely dense on the ground in some regions in Eidolon. in other regions, you may go a long time without seeing any at all. Pick them up when you see them, but watch out-- it's easy to pick so many berries that you can't eat them fast enough before they go bad.

It's generally not possible to subsist on blackberries alone, given their patchy geographic spread. However, they are fairly common, and it's easy to keep some in your inventory at all times.

WHAT ABOUT RED MEAT?

It's honesty not worth spending the time to hunt large animals. Catching fish is safer and faster. It is very easy to play Eidolon for many hours without ever using your bow to kill a living creature.
Hazards to avoid
If you're dying in Eidolon, it might be because you're taking unnecesarry risks. Stay away from the things listed here and you should be able to play for many hours without ever getting close to something that seriously threatens your life.

LONG SWIMS

All water in Eidolon's pacific northwest is freezing cold! Spending too long in the water will cause you to slowly die.

Only swim across small bodies of water. Make sure you can see the other side clearly, and make sure that you can easily get across in one or two minutes. If the other side of the water is shrouded by fog, it might be too far to safely cross..

If you spend too long in the water, you will get a red-bordered "frozen" icon in the lower left-hand corner of your screen. Soon afterwards, you'll get a red-bordered "skull" image, and will start to die. Get out of the water as fast as you can! Most of the time, once you leave the water, the skull will vanish immediately and you will soon lose your freezing status entirely. However, if it's not going away quickly enough to your liking, you can start a fire to warm yourself up.

Watch out: the "hitboxes" of Eidolon's rivers, lakes, and oceans are often larger than the actul bodies of water themselves. While walking on the shoreline, you may sometimes hear sloshing water sounds and notice that you are suddenly freezing. This is because the game thinks you are actually standing in the water. Get out of there, or you'll suffer the same problems associated with swimming. Avoid going AFK right on the shore of a body of water.

WILD ANIMALS

Never, for any reason, approach a bear. They will charge and attack you. There is no need to shoot wild animals at all if you're on a fish diet, so staying away from animals in general is probably the safest.

FALLS

Falling from a cliff will wound you. Do not travel along the top of long, steep slopes and do not walk too close to the edge of a cliff. It's possible to find yourself travelling down a slope too steep to climb back up.

The traditional method of scaling impossible slopes in videogames works in Eidolon: a slope too steep to climb straight up may be scalable if you strafe along it sideways while slowly climbing. If you do this in Eidolon, be careful: a wrong step may cause you to fall.

EATING UNCOOKED MEAT

Don't do it! Cook all your meat before eating it, or you'll get sick.
How to heal yourself
If you become injured, you'll start requiring a lot more food and sleep. You may also get a "festering" wound, which can be very dangerous. However, there are a few simple ways to fix the festering status and heal your wounds.

HEALING SWAMPS

Have you noticed any "mangrove forest"-style groves dotted across the landscape? The trees here have tall roots, the water here is brown and doens't freeze you, and the air is filled with bright lights. This swamp will heal your wounds immediately!

Stepping into the water will cure you and apply the energized status you usually get after sleeping. If you die, you will also rematerialize in one of these swamps. They are found all over the map.

HONEY

Some trees have beehives hanging high in the branches. They contain honey, which can be used as an antibacterial. Shoot a hive down with a bow and use the honey when you have the wounded status.

Try keeping honey in your inventory to make this easier; hives are very rare and it is unlikey that you will be able to hunt one down when you really need it.

CAMPING OUT

If you are in a difficult location or cannot reach a swamp or a source of honey, try camping out beside a body of water. This will allow you to satisfy the increased hunger requirements that come from being wounded.

However, it may also be very boring!

OMG THANK YOU! I am 14 hours into the game, and the last 3 I have had a festering wound, almost ran out of food, and had 0 idea how to heal at all, and can't get more than 30 seconds of running before becoming exhausted again. I was getting so frustrated, but this is a great help!

Jumped off the binocular tower at the beginning of the game. Tried so hard to heal myself as a newbie. Hours later I ended up just dying because it was too much of a pain to deal with. It would be nice if more antibiotic stuff were to grow :( Really disappointing to read that I have basically zero chance of healing myself.

@cantseetheforest -- yes, beehives are extremely rare. I only ever saw one.

Really nice basic survival guide -- highly recommended. Thanks! Here's a question: I haven't found any beehives yet. Is it safe to assume they're pretty rare, or are they found more frequently in a certain type of forest or tree?
