This tilted Martian Tripod was in the first ever publication of The War of the Worlds in "Pearson's Magazine" (1897). Personally, I interpret their ability to tilt so stupidly far in Goble's illustrations as being thanks to telekinetic manipulation: Take a cup, tilt it, and roll the bottom edge across a table without letting go. Now imagine that instead of your hands manipulating the cup, it's invisible mind power. Nutty stuff.
