How to set up Xbox controller for item shortcuts
By Qladstone 權鴛石
In the original Dragon's Dogma, all items needed to be accessed through the item menu. Later on they introduced shortcuts. On PC you have keyboard shortcuts, but you can't use controller shortcuts. It's inconvenient to have to reach to the keyboard when you are using the controller, especially if you are sitting on a couch. Here's a way you can create a Steam controller layout to access item shortcuts using only your controller.

What does this do?

In game, pressing L1 + Dpad button will be registered as a keystroke 1, 2, 3, 4 respectively. This allows you to shortcut items.

How to shortcut items?

Open item menu, select item, then press the keystroke (in this case L1 + Dpad). You will know it worked when the a number shows up beside the item corrseponding to 1, 2, 3, or 4.

Extra

Some items just cannot be given shortcuts like special arrows and throwables. It's a pity but too bad. Mainly you can shortcut the lantern and consumables. Being able to turn on/off the lantern without going into the menu is a huge difference in the experience already.

L1 will pull out the bow or shield if you have one, if it bothers you, use R1 (Right Bumper) as the mode shift button in step 8 instead.

You can actually shortcut 5 items. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. You can use a similar process to map R3 (right stick click) to 5. I recommend using this for lantern and saving the L1 + Dpad for consumables.

Advanced tips.

You can set up other mappings too. Ever felt annoyed that you can't move the camera when charging focussed bolt? You can control camera with claw grip, but some people find claw grip uncomfortable. Just create a mapping for R3. By default, R3 (right-stick click) centres your camera where you are facing. You can make a mode-shift map R1 + R2 to register an R3 keypress. So when you are charging focussed bolt, just press R1 + R2 and the camera will turn to where your character is facing.

Also tested it with mouse buttons, and they re not working. It's maybe my config or idk. (keyboard: exodus macro, mouse: razer naga trinity) or just steam things...

In my case, I set up everything based on this guide, but sadly no keyboard input (1-2-3-4) fires. I also tried to map to any other xbox button, for example I set the dpad up to B button and it fires the B button. So I'm clueless what is the cause of this. :S

I did everything exactly as mentioned above, however the game doesn't seem to register the keyboard 1-2-3-4 for the d-pad.
The only thing i noticed is that when I press the LB, the d-pad buttons are not giving commands to the pawns anymore.

I double checked the shortkeys, I assigned the lantern to 1 in the inventory and 3 other curatives to 2-3-4. Nothing happens.

Maybe I have no idea what to do. PLS send help :S

Mode-Shift-key + Input-key = Output-key

You will see Input-key on the left side of the menu.

So for LB + Dpad = keyboard numbers, Dpad is on the left side of the menu as shown in the screenshot.

For RB + RT = keyboard numbers, you should select "Triggers" on the left side of the menu, then create mode-shift for Right Trigger, set the mode-shift button to Right-Bumper.

I can make mode shifts for the DPad, Triggers (R2/L2), ABYX buttons, and Joysticks but not for the bumpers (R1/L1), or the menu buttons, as the base...so not certain how to do the Advanced Tips portion since I can't technically do a Mode Shift with R1+L1 to equal R3.

I could do R2+R1, or L2+L1 or any combination of the Triggers + Bumpers, but not Bumper + anything else.
