Marathon

S Requirement : 400,000 Can do Endless

Do special clear as much as you can, whether it's Tetris or T-Spin. And if the increased speed makes you struggle, focus on survive. However game over won't let you lose your record.

You can do this in Endless, I got 409,585 for Endless and got S as well, so the threshold should be the same for Endless.

You want to pick a speed level you are comfortable with but also slightly challenging. A Tetris worths 800 in Speed Level 1, but 12,000 in Speed Level 15. I usually go for Speed Level 10 since it's a comfortable speed for me to do T-Spin setups.

There's a fixed speed level for Marathon. If you start from Speed level 1, after you clear 10 lines, the Speed level will increased by 1, So you will reach Speed level 5 after 40 cleared lines.
However, if you chose Speed level 5 to start with, the speed won't increase until you cleared 50 lines.
The speed will reach level 15 no matter what speed you are starting with, so you might as well just pick a higher speed first for better score. Endless will only reach Speed level 15 as well.
Zone Marathon

S Requirement : 800,000
THIS MODE IS CURRENTLY NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS ACHIEVEMENT.

General rules are the same as Marathon, except you have Zone meter now, so you can use the same strategy you used for Marathon.
It is recommended to increase your initial speed as you will earn more score in higher speed lvl and it'll eventually reach lv15 anyway.

You earn 25% Zone meter for every 8 line clears. If you want to know how to use Zone effectively, check the section for "A" Student in this guide below :
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2959066593
Ultra

S Requirement : 30,000

Go for special clear, try to maintain your Back-to-back. you get 800 for every Tetris, but 1200 for every Tetris with Back-to-back.
It is better to be slow and keep your stack stable than rush and misdrop to break your score bonus.
Here I'll list some viable options below :

  1. Tetris + B2B

If you want to reach Ultra's S requirement with only Tetris and not breaking Back-to-back, you'll get 30K after 21 Tetris clears. For 3 minutes, that means you'll have to do a Tetris every 8.5 seconds.

  2. T-Spin + B2B
If you can't reach this speed with purely Tetris, learning T-Spin setups can help you with line clear efficiency.

T-Spin Double (TSD) gets the same score with a Tetris, but it only clears 2 lines, meaning it takes less time to build each TSD.
In this image I went for 6-3 stack, I can stack for TSD while doing Tetris to lower the board.

You can learn this systematically by learning LST Stacking. See this great video of LST Stacking made by KezDaBez, or check it out on FOUR[four.lol]

  3. Combo
Alternatively, if you are not fast enough with stacking but good with combo, you can consider doing it with Combo.

with the Tetris + B2B method, you need to do Tetris 21 times. Each Tetris clears 4 lines at once, Which means you need to clear 84 lines in total.
For combo, 17 Combo will get you 10K points, and you only need to clear 18 lines for it. Do it 3 times will get you 30K points, and you only have to clear 54 lines in total.

While it sounds more efficient, Getting high combo is actually very demanding. And it requires soft drop to maintain the combo sometimes, each line clear animation also costs extra time.

I don't recommend this method, however considering there might be people who aren't fast but having good foresight with combo, overall it is still an option.
Sprint

S Requirement : 01:20
This one will require a lot of practice.

Stacking Method

The most popular Sprint method is either 6-3 or 9-0. 9-0 Is easier while 6-3 is more optimized, but you can still achieve this with both way.

6-3 Stacking is the most common method people use for 40L, KezDaBez explains really well in his 6-3 Stacking guide video, spend 5 minutes watching this will make you improve much faster.
However if your 40L record is above 2 minutes, you should start with 9-0 since It would be harder to keep both stacking parts in 6-3 equally high if you don't have good fundamental of stacking.

There are tons of videos online covering how to be faster in Tetris. This video from Wawi Tetris helped me a lot when I started playing Tetris.

Tips on increasing speed
  • Get used to Your Controls

I wanted to call this one "Optimize your Control" but I didn't, since there are pro players playing really fast with Spacebar as harddrop.

I forgot where I heard this, but when I started learning, I heard that compared to Up button, you need to press slightly harder for Spacebar, and pressing Spacebar is also easier for causing muscle pain.

The point is, you want to have a control setup you decided to get familiar with for Tetris games, similar to people setting C or Ctrl as crouch for every shooter games they played.

I use Z X for rotate, C for hold, directional button for movement and drop.
So my left hand is in charge of rotation and special function, and my right hand does everything that's related to moving my pieces.
My buttons are close to each other so I can conveniently press them, and my hand is also in a comfortable gesture.

Personally I think this control setup helped me a lot, but changing your control is optional after all, There will be an uncomfortable period that you have to get accustomed to your new control.

  • Learn Finesse
The purpose of Finesse is to learn to move a piece to its ideal position using the fewest possible key presses, making your every keypress optimized and efficient, and since we had a fixed method to place our pieces, we won't be uncertainty about how to move it once we get used to it.

Here's an example of I piece Finesse. I'll list my keypresses for these 2 I pieces :
    1 : Rotate Counterclockwise(CCW) -> Left -> Left -> Left
    2 : Hold Left -> Rotate CCW

While learning Finesse is helpful to increase your speed, I personally consider it to be the most painful one to learn, and I don't recommend learning this unless your Sprint record is within 2 minutes. Also, you should get used to rotate both directions before learning this.

I personally practiced Finesse on https://tetr.io/, it's another Tetris game which's pretty active in Tetris community.

You can play this without account, first adjust your settings in CONFIG, then go to SOLO->40 LINES

When you started learning finesse, check the box for "Alert on finesse fault" and start playing. It makes a whistle sound whenever you made a finesse mistake. after finish the game, check the replay and pay attention to the part where you made Finesse mistakes, intentionally practice that in ZEN mode and eventually you'll get all finesse correct.

another hardcore way to practice is to check the box for "Retry on finesse fault" and start playing.
"Retry on Finesse Fault" will restart your game if you did wrong finesse.

I'll warn again that Finesse is extremely counter intuitive, as it forces you to change your habit of playing. This could lead to frustrations if you started learning it too early.
While it increases your efficiency on placing pieces, There are other factors affecting your speed and accuracy as well : your placement for pieces, your foresight on NEXT pieces, your physical and mental health while playing. These are on a higher priority than learning finesse.

For details of Finesse, you can check out FOUR[four.lol]

  • Improve your stacking

Sometimes you may find yourself hesitating to find a good spot to place your piece. In Sprint, if you realized that you have hesitated for too long, you should just place it somewhere that won't leave too much empty gap below.

But you could prevent this problem happening from the start, and that is to improve your stacking.
Basically you want to avoid too much I dependencies, I dependencies means we can only use I piece to fill certain column without leaving empty gap.
Also, have foresight for your Next. You want to find a placement for your next piece before you place your current piece, a lack of foresight is usually the cause of I dependencies.

You need to have the awareness of not creating too much 3-block height difference. You don't want to have more than 2 I dependencies at the same time.

Here's a sprint record by Doremy, a good method to practice is to watch pro's Sprint video, pause, predict how you'll place the pieces they have, play the video and see if the answer is different. you want to think about what makes their solutions work.
Master

S Requirement : 130 Line Clears Can do Endless

The hardest one to obtain. When you finished this one, two things will grow : your mental resistance to high speed, and your hatred to O piece.
Do what you do in Marathon except it's in extreme speed.

Similar speed level increasing rule as Marathon, for every 10 line clears, the Speed level will increased by 1, unless you start with speed level equal or above the speed level it's supposed to be.
So you will want your line clear to worth as much as possible, It's hard to do T-Spin with this speed, I would just go for corner 1 Wide.

Here are some tips for Master :
  • Stalling

Stalling gives you more time to think, make good use of Stalling. It's a mechanism which you move or rotate to delay locking. Rotate is more recommended because once you moved your piece to an immovable space, even if you are still pressing key to move it, the piece will lock unpredictably.
To do Stalling, all you have to do is spamming rotate at an appropriate speed.
You can even rotate the O piece for stalling.

  • Move First, Then Rotate

If you Rotate first, sometimes the piece will stuck into the lower part of your stack, causing you unable to move it left or right. I personally hold either left or right button to move my pieces, then rotate while holding it.

  • Make your Center Slightly Higher

For other pieces, you may spam rotate to get them out, but O will easily get stucked.

Higher center means you will regain control to O piece, be careful once you went to left or right it's a point of no return.
Classic Score Attack

S requirement : 200,000
THIS MODE IS CURRENTLY NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS ACHIEVEMENT.

If you still want to get S for this achievement, it's better to save this for the last as it uses different rule from all other modes you played.

The Classic Tetris has different rules as follows :
  • Slower DAS (Delayed Auto Shift), it's usually more efficient to tap than hold to move.
  • Different Rotation System, meaning some spins in other modes aren't available here.
  • Completely random pieces, at worst case you will never get the piece you want.
  • No Back-to-back, Combo and T-Spin bonus.
  • Piece appears differently when it spawns.
  • Extreme fast Lock Delay
  • 1 NEXT piece only
  • No Ghost
  • No Hold

With the nature of Classic Tetris, it makes it crucial to be able to foresight your NEXT pieces and how different rotation with piece can leave you a cleaner stack.

You want to choose an Initial Speed LV you are comfortable to do Tetris with.
(Your current speed lv * 10) is the threshold when Speed lv will start increase by 1 with every 10 line clears.
For example, in Speed LV4, it will stay LV4 until you reach 50 line clears and then it will get you to LV5. If you start with LV6, speed will not increase until you do 70 line clears.

However no matter what Speed LV you are starting with, from Line 120 the speed lv will increase by 1 with every 10 line clears.

GIF from Doremy's Classic Score Attack gameplay

Score for Tetris = 1200 * (Speed LV+1)
For example, doing Tetris in LV0 will give you 1200, in LV2 it will give you 3600.

Generally, you want to be able to see how your next piece can fit with your current block while keeping the board flat, and do Tetris whenever it's available unless you need I piece to maintain your stacking.

Misdrop in this mode is fatal, if it happened, avoid stacking on top of the gap and try to figure the most efficient way to solve it.

Keep the board as low as possible, do a Tetris whenever you can, fast lock delay means it's usually unforgiving when your stack is really high.

I recommend watching Classic Tetris tournament and study their placements, slow it down and predict where they place the pieces, compare their actual placement with your prediction and figure the reason they do it.
Chill Marathon

S Requirement : 200,000

Same as Marathon except you won't die, and the S requirement is much lower.
You lose all the score after top out, so you might as well restart the game if that happened.
You can also customize the Line goal and Tetrimino order, I don't think the line goal affects S requirement, although unconfirmed.
Quick Play

SS Requirement : 10,000

criminally easy to get SS, so we might as well just get SS directly.
Leave the settings at default (30L) and just keep doing Tetris or T-Spin.
Tips of this is written in the section of "Savvy & Strong" achievement in the 100% achievement guide.
https://gtm.steamproxy.vip/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2959066593
Playlist Series

S requirement : 35,000

S requirement for all Playlist series Effect Mode is the same.
Use the same method in Quick Play, except you repeat it 12 times, because there are total 12 levels for this. You will probably get SS of this as well.
All Clear

S Requirement : 26

Early levels are simply move and rotates, get used to them and execute them as fast as you can. Or you can take a screenshot, pause the game, find the solutions and come back to execute it.
Remember that each drop must be clearing lines, otherwise it will be registered as MISS even if it's an All Clear solution.

When you spin pieces into place, manually harddrop will save you some time, it's a good habit to have.

You need to know how to spin every pieces (except O) at later levels. I'll only list some of the most common spins, please note that Rotate Left stands for Rotate Counterclockwise, Rotate Right stands for Rotate Clockwise :

S/Z Spins
The key of S/Z Spin is to place them on top of the "hook" and then rotate. S : Rotate Right, Place on Hook, Rotate Right Z : Rotate Left, Place on Hook, Rotate Left My method to memorize is "S is facing right, so it spins to right." please note that this doesn't apply to every S/Z Spin. 1st S : Rotate Right, Soft Drop, Rotate Right 2nd S : Rotate Left, Soft Drop, Rotate Left 1st Z : Rotate Left, Soft Drop, Rotate Left 2nd Z : Rotate Left, Place on Hook, Rotate Left The 2nd S spins differently because it's being squeezed by the wall. If you are interested in the concept of twisting, see this video by Tetrium.
T Spins
1st T : Rotate Right My method to memorize is "T is facing right, so it spins to right." 1st T : Rotate Right, Soft Drop, Rotate Left, Rotate Left, Rotate Left 2nd T : Rotate Right, Soft Drop, Rotate Left, Rotate Left 3rd T : Rotate Right, Soft Drop, Rotate Left The popular DT Cannon.
L/J Spins
L/J spin is visually more intuitive. stick them in, L spins right, J spins left. For this L/J spin, stick it in while facing down, L spins left, J spins right.

There are maps for I spin as well, but I usually just abandon them (you just immediately drop pieces to make it change map), since the time you spent to execute them doesn't worth it anyway.

For all All Clear solutions, see Doremy's video of it.
Combo

S Requirement : 100

Combo amount is the only factor that matters. Each successful combo will extend your time.
Good mode to study combo if you are new to it,

Directly harddrop if you realized you are out of combo, this will save you some time.

If you learnt 4W,you can basically execute any combo setup.
check Garbo's guide on 4W if you are interested in it.
Target

S Requirement : 26

You can be inventive with your solution in this one, the goal is to clear the glowing blocks.

You need to have the mindset that filling this yellow marked line is the priority, this may help you to find the solution faster.
Countdown

S Requirement : 42,000 Can do Endless

I pieces will drop at the shining columns after you placed a certain amount of pieces, and you get score bonus if they cleared the lines.
Treat them like there are already blocks in the shining columns and stack somewhere else.
It can easily go crazy if you are stacking too high in the shining column.
Don't worry too much about I dependencies, since these dropping I pieces will solve it for you, and they are least likely to drop on higher stacks.
Purify

S Requirement : 350 Endless won't count

Garbage lines will constantly appear underneath. Clear them.
Focus on downstack, stacking too much by yourself doesn't help with the score.
Game Over won't let you lose the score.

Avoid stacking more above your empty gaps, find other better solutions if possible.
Mystery

S Requirement : 300,000 Can do Endless

It's like Marathon except you will receive a random effect after placing certain amount of lines.
Personally I think this one is harder than Master. It's heavily RNG, random effects comes as combinations in later game, most of them ruin your board so bad that you can barely stack.

I'll introduce some random effects here :

  • Vertical Flip : Flip your board upside down.
  • No Next : Hide your Next queues.
Vertical Flip : Some people might be good at dealing with this But this one always mess me up so badly, especially if it's combined with bombs. Stall as much as you can to find a good placement for pieces.
No Next : Might ruin you depends on your playstyle and how you place your blocks.

  • No Ghost : Hide your Ghost Piece Display.
Might slow you down, but since the random effects appear after placing lines instead of time, it's not affecting too much.

  • No Hold : Not allowing you to hold.
Could mess with your stacking at certain situation, could be a big threat if mixed with other random effects.

  • Fractured : Turn your pieces to the 3-block version "Trimino".

  • 7 In a Row : makes your next 7 pieces become the same pieces.
Not dangerous most of the time, you can even just solve it like this, beware of other random effect that might ruins it tho.

  • Giant : makes your piece 4 times larger.
Can be dangerous when combined with other effects, keep your board flat so you can place them.

  • Diamond / Cross Bomb : Explodes after you placed 10 pieces, can be disarmed by clearing the line it's in.
This one is deadly when you have too many empty gaps below. Disarm them at all cost! even if it means messing with your own board.

  • Up Close : Zoom in on your board.
This one is not really doing too much.

  • Bump Up : Gives you a few garbage lines.
a straight-forward effect, might even be beneficial sometimes.

  • Vertical / Horizontal Spin : Offsets part of your lines.
It will mess up your board badly if you are doing setups, but if you are stacking flatly you will be ok.

  • Horizontal Flip : Mirror your board.
Not causing any problems most of the time.

  • Speed Reset : Reset your Speed level to 1.
Helps you to take a breath.
There's also an effect called "Reset" but I didn't figure out the difference.

  • All Clear : Clears your board completely.
A god sent gift, it also gives you score.

  • Bonus Rally : Double your score gain from clearing lines.
The best one, the rarest one.
You have a higher chance to get this effect in high speed level.

For Purify mode you have to get an S rank in non-endless mode. Getting an S in Endless mode will not "count" for the achievement

finally i did ultra, that took some time. now i gotta do sprint and i got the base ones done
Nedur Frog  [author] 17 Oct, 2024 @ 12:06am
@SillyPope if you can do master that means you have decent reaction and placing but lack of efficiency to perform them, try to improve your finesse, at first it'll feel slower than your normal speed but when you get used to it you will feel like controlling tetriminos with your mind instead of vision.

Thank you for mentioning endless mode! I did a run of mystery mode and only got 200k points when I hit the line cleared total. Was able to hop in on mystery and once I hit 300k I topped out and got the S rank.
I can say as of August of 2024 You still do not need to get an S rank in Classic Score Attack to get the achievement. Thanks for your guide, the point thresholds were very helpful.

@adol- syn-
From SolariDraco's guide, it seems line clear is the requirement for Master not the score, I'll update that
