Explanation

Since RE4 Remake is out, I've decided to create this guide so that it's convenient for whoever is starting out in the RE franchise with a PS4 controller (can also be a PS5). RE4 is an old game, we can't deny that, but the gameplay is timeless and has been talked about a ton, but, not the same can be said for the visual aspects, by today's standards of course. Granted, the game was really way ahead of its time and redefined/created a whole genre. We'll be using the wonderful RE4 HD Project, which is the most impressive fan remaster to date.

What this guide will go over
  • Improving Visuals
  • Improving Gameplay
  • Improving QoL
  • Improving Dualshock 4 (or 5) player experience
Modding RE4 to HD

Step 1
Visit the RE4 HD Project [www.re4hd.com] website

Step 2
Click on the Download tab.

Step 3
Read WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW and SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS

Step 4
Look in DOWNLOAD LINKS. There you will see 2 options for downloading.
  • DIRECT DOWNLOAD
  • TORRENT

*DISCLAIMER*
It's best to create a folder on a drive (with space, preferably) for the HD Project, first, on the PC before you start downloading. It's required to have a legitimate copy of the game installed on your PC, through steam and you should have at least launched the game once.

For those who don't want to use a torrent feel free to use the direct download options (if you want to waste less time use a Torrent. Qtorrent is the recommended choice). But I recommend against using MEGA since it has a limit on how much you can transfer/download unless if you have a subscription. I went instead with media fire route, which was the most time consuming route. Don't tick all of the boxes in the MediaFire download window otherwise you'll get a warning for over exceeding the free limit and then you'll be shoved in with a premium plan to your face. You can select a few of the files to download (5 boxes minimum, possibly) and download everything from there. It will take time. While your downloads ongoing in the background, you can go grab yourself a hot cup of coco or freshly brewed cup of cidah' and go play Minecraft or something.

Step 5
When it's done downloading make sure to visit the mod folder you created in the file explorer. If you're using 7zip be sure for the installer .rar folder to use "extract to -"
Password for completing the extraction is: re4hdproject - all lowercase.

Step 6
Once everything you've downloaded is in a single folder, create a second folder called "Install" or something of your choosing.

Step 7
Move all of the bins, the single zip folder and setup executable in the newly created folder and only leave out BIN&EXE_FILES.sfv and BIO4.sfv

It should look something like this.

Step 8
Run the setup executable.

Step 9
Find your game installation path, it should find it by default. If you're having trouble finding it you can go to your steam library and right-click RE4 and hover over Manage > Browse local files to open the directory in which you will see the file path in your file explorer.

(File path example: C: > Program FIles (86x) > Steam > steamapps > common > Resident Evil 4 or (if on a another drive) D: > Steam Library > steamapps > common > Resident Evil 4

Step 10
The installer will ask you to find the BIO4.sfv file, which is located in the folder you created for the mod. Once everything is installed, you're basically almost done.

Step 10.5
*LINUX (Proton & Steam Deck) USERS ONLY*
Make sure to add WINEDLLOVERRIDES=”dinput8=n,b” %command% in the steam launch options by going in your steam library and right-clicking on RE4 > Properties > Enter command

Step 11
Launch the game, you'll get a warn about your executable file not being patched with the 4GBpatch. Click YES, to patch it and restart the game.

Step 12
You're now done with installing the RE4 HD Project. Make sure to turn the in-game brightness levels all the way up to maximize visual clarity & quality. You can also tweak tons of settings to your heart's content in-game by pressing F1

Playstation Button Prompts
So the game uses XBOX prompts when you have connected a controller, here is a way to fix that.
*Credit to the steam user Conan in showing how to install the mod. Mod is created by Bingo

Step 1
Go here: DarkSamus's PS/X360/GC/PC button mods [residentevilmodding.boards.net]

Step 2
Either choose: Playstation buttons for the original controls or PS2 controls and buttons
I went with the original

*Note
Firefox and Ublock Origin might block this site, since it's considered unsafe but it's safe if you follow the necessary steps

Step 3
Unpack or open the .zip that you've downloaded.

Step 4
Copy and paste the included files (RE4HDTEX & Install Buttons.bat) into your RE4 directory.

It should look something like this.

Step 5
Run the .bat file. and the buttons have now been installed!
Using PS2 layout
The only thing remaining left to do is to reconfigure the button prompts, unless, you want to have an annoying experience.

Step 1
Right-click on RE4 in your Steam game library and go to properties.

Step 2
Look in the side bar and click on the bottom option "Controller"

Step 3
Change the "Use default settings" in the override list to "Enable Steam input"

Step 4
Exit out of the properties window and click on gear/cog icon above your friends list. Make sure to connect your controller to your PC before you click on the gear/cog, otherwise the option will not show.

Step 5
Hover over manage and click on "Controller layout"

Step 6
Click on the layout preset window with the controller icon and go to "Community Layouts"

Step 7
Download the top preset (with the most likes and hours).

Step 8
Congratulations you've completed this guide! Now enjoy playing with your Dualshock 4 (or 5) controller and go on and kill some Ganados!
Conclusion
Thanks a lot for using and following this guide. I hope everything has worked out well for you. This guide was tailored to people who have Dualshock controllers and want to experience the (2005) version of the game before they dip their toes in to the remake, like myself. I decided to create this guide because there was nothing about how to play with Dualshock controllers on Steam. I went through a little bit of trial and error. Suffering at the first with the weird button layout (the square button/action button was the same for using the map - absolute nightmare) almost made me play with Mouse and Keyboard, but decided not to since I wanted to make the experience feel original as possible. I just want to thank the wonderful team developing the RE4 HD Project, their work is immaculate. Thanks to CAPCOM for not taking it down, unlike other companies. Thanks to Ringo for creating the button prompt mod. and lastly thanks to The Sphere Hunter or Suzi for igniting my interest for this series. Anyways, Adiós!

I have not experienced the slow motion problem myself. So far, I've seen is that it only affects PC's with low specs and that methods in fixing it are subjective. Though I will check if there is a definitive fix for this, but I'm not promising on implementing solutions (if there are any, concrete, into this guide) because there's expectations that the people that use this guide have a decent enough of a PC to game with.

you forgotton how to solve the slow motion problem, so this guide is useless.
