From the main menu on either the controller dpad or keyboard press:

Left Left Left Left
Right Right Right Right
Left Right Left Right Left Right Left Right

You should see the Free Mode selection light up and the game will save. From here you can play the entirety of Free Mode either solo or in co-op. However, you will still need to individually unlock the extra characters in Story Mode.

I like how they told us about this code with only the characters faces on the website
{LÄNK BORTTAGEN} (all the way to the bottom)
