What's Going Wrong?
You may have booted up G String and found that the game runs without audio. This is, sadly, an error with the game itself and not something that can be fixed without modifying your files.

This bug is the result of the .vpk format, a type of file that's identical to the folders you have on your computer. The only difference is that they can easily be swapped around for modding, and they can't be read without special software. All source engine games now use the .vpk system to store their assets, though this wasn't always the case. Previously, the contents of these folders existed right within the game's directory.

Herein lies the issue; G String's sound system cannot read audio from this new specialized format, and unless we manually rebuild the old file structure the game will be mute. Luckily, if you own G String you already have all the data you need, we just need to pull it out of the .vpk and drop it the game's directory.
What You'll Need
To get the sound files out of the .vpk, we'll need a tool called GFCscape. GFCscape is used to view the insides of a .vpk and export its contents.

The latest version of GFCscape can be downloaded here.[nemstools.github.io] Be sure to also download the required .NET Framework if you don't already have it, or aren't sure if you already have it.
How To Fix
To start, we'll need to open up the _dir file with GFCscape, which contains pointers to all the other .vpk content. You'll need to navigate to G String in your steamapps directory, specifically at \steamapps\common\G String\gstringv2. You can quickly open up already at \G String\ by going to your Steam Library, right clicking on the game and navigating to "Browse local files" under the "Manage" option.

Once in the \gstringv2 folder, you'll need to open up gstringv2_dir.vpk with GFCscape. You should be greeted with the game's full asset tree. You're looking for the folder labeled sound.

Go ahead and right click on the sound folder, and extract all of it. You'll be prompted to make a directory to extract it into, just be sure that once you're done exporting you have the sound folder with all of its contents, exactly as it is when viewed inside GFCscape

Now, you'll want to take your sound folder, copy it, and paste it directly into \steamapps\common\G String\gstringv2. This should merge it with \gstringv2\sound, which should already exist, and create that directory if it does not. Be sure not to paste the sound folder you just extracted inside of the already existing sound folder. When you're done, \gstringv2\sound should contain exactly the same items as the sounds folder in GFCscape.

With that, you should be finished! Running the game now should provide the intended experience. Credit goes to user SatisfiedShower for contacting the developer and sharing this fix with me on the forums. If you have any further issues or difficulty, please leave a comment below.

If you're having sound issues try insane black rock shooter's advice, commented march 12, 2024, before you try GCF method. Be certain to highlight the line of text specified by black rock shooter, not including quotes (they won't be there), in its entirety before deleting. Be certain to click on file in the top left corner of the window afterwards, and save this now modified verson of the text file. The file in question is in the gstringv2 directory and is simply called gameinfo. Make sure it says text document in the Type column. After this, you can boot the game through steam as usual and it should have restored the sound. If you screw up this step and have saved an incorrect version of the gameinfo txt, verfiy files from your library or uninstall and try again.

For me the easier fix proposed by user "❤Insane Black Rock Shooter❤ " in this comment section worked, I don't know if it works for everybody. I also reported it to the developer and started a discussion thread on PC Gaming Wiki.

yeah the post below yours, open "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\G String\gstringv2\gameinfo.txt" then just delete the Game |gameinfo_path| line inside SearchPaths

Is there an easier way to fix the audio that doesn't involve installing 2 programs?

I found a way to fix the audio too, open the gameinfo.txt and comment out the
"Game |gameinfo_path|." line, and the sounds are back.

@JINORU If you made a good quality video review it certainly wouldn't hurt, I'd link it at the bottom off the guide and provide credit.

Looking back through, it seems somehow some images that were previously included in this guide have been removed, and not by me. I'm not sure why.
