If you get assigned defender - Your job is defend! That means you play homebase, build up defences - And keep the enemies from pushing in and taking your teams core! The thing that dictates who wins and loses!

What you should NOT do as defender (At start of game) Run down with special ops or assaults to attack - Because, and i'm sorry but spoiler here for those that might not understand and need a few moments!

Not defending the base or core results in your team losing!

And I know for some that the above message might be a bit too much to process - After all, it does show up in big letters, and you spend a good couple minutes being assigned roles for your whole team - I'm sure they're just lost in translation somewhere :)
