Tram Guide
Hi there, and welcome to my guide on “How to use Trams in Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic”.

While tram existed in the game from the very beginning, only recently have they received the update, that added various streets with tram tracks, their own depot, stations, end stations, etc.

And with the new update, many players decided to use trams either again or for their very first time. This guide is meant to target these players and show them full potential of a tram network in this game.

Note: This guide is not about details on creating transit lines. The goal of this guide is only to show what specifically trams can do and how to use some of their unique perks. If you want to learn how to make the lines for public transit themselves, please use this guide [Click to move to the Guide].
Infrastructure
Current vanilla infrastructure used by trams currently consists of
- 2 roads with tram tracks (Asphalt and Panel)
- 5 bridges with tram tracks
- 1 tunnel with tram tracks
- 2 tram depots
- 2 tram stations
- 1 tram end station
Plus all of passenger railway infrastructure

Asphalt road with tram tracks
Allows for mixed use operations
- Trams
- Other street vehicles (Buses, Trucks, Cars, etc.)
- Pedestrians

Other notes
- Traffic signs and traffic lights can be placed on this street
- Street cannot be made into one-way road
- Trolleybuses cannot use this road

Asphalt street shared by tram, cars and pedestrians

Panel road with tram tracks
Otherwise known as a “Tram Only” road
- Trams only
- No other street vehicles
- No pedestrians (footpath crossings are still allowed)

⚠️ Important notes
- After upgrading basic panel road, it will no longer be accessible to other road users but trams
- Pedestrians cannot walk directly on the road, in case of a station encased in between of panel roads, use footpath connections to allow pedestrians access the station
- Construction vehicles can still use it when reaching some building connected only via this road

Panel street used exclusively by tram

Brick road with tram tracks
Added with the Early Start DLC
You are required to own this DLC in order to use this road type
- Mixed operation (Trams & Other Traffic)
- Pedestrians allowed
- Etc.

(Mechanically same as the asphalt version of this road type)

New tram road added in the Early Start DLC

Stations
Allow for vehicles to stop and load/unload commuters
- Can be used by both trams and buses
- Larger station has a “side lane” allowing for vehicle to stop without blocking traffic

End station
Allow for trams to turn around an “even the gabs” in between other vehicles on the line
- Cannot be used to load/unload commuters
- Tram end station is exclusive only to trams (no buses)

Stations for serving commuters

Station for turning around and line spacing

The tram railroad connection
Previously described as “mode switching”
- Allows for trams to cross from railway to road tramway and vice versa
- Only usable by trams (No other train types can use it)

Other notes
- Trams will fully switch AI and behaviour between the “Road AI” and “Rail AI” (including the control buttons for different modes

Operating the tram network
Trams can operate on the roads with tram tracks, electrified railways or on “mixed network” utilising both styles.

Street operation
Trams behave as road vehicle with few oddities
- Tram cannot overtake other vehicles
- Tram will ignore some traffic signs (for example “general motor vehicle ban”)
- Tram cannot use road waypoints

⚠️Important notes
- Trams will require either a road “loop” or “end station” at the end of their route, they cannot flip around in the station like buses and other road vehicles

Railway operation
Trams behave as regular EMU (electric multiple unit) train
- Will require electrified railway
- Will obey signals
- Will have same manual controls as railway vehicle (Flip, Stop, Ignore Signal)

Other notes
- Tram in the “railway mode” will be able to flip around in the station just like any other train, no loops needed in this mode

Mixed operation
Is use of both modes above via the “Tram railroad connection”
Can be also to connect trams directly to
- Border customs house
- Railway depot
- Train production factory

Depots
Trams can be purchased both in their own “Tram Depot” and the regular “Railway Depot”

Tram depot
- Works like a road depot
- Only trams can be purchased
- Only trams can be stored

Other notes
- This depot cannot be used to couple tram cars together
- Already coupled trams (from train depot) can be moved and stored here

Railway depot
- All rail-type vehicles can be purchased there (Locomotives, metros, EMUs, DMUs, trams, etc.)
- Can be used to couple multiple railway vehicles together (including trams)

Other info
- Cannot be connected directly to tram network (only with rail road)
It is now possible for train depot to be directly connected with the tram network
- Trams cannot be coupled up with other rail vehicles
- Trams purchased at the border may require railway depot if direct rail connection between customs house and tram network doesn’t exist as many trams cannot be fit onto flatbed trucks due to their size & weight

Example of a tram that cannot be fitted onto vanilla flatbed

Coupling trams together in railway depot

Trams from railway depot can be moved to tram depot and vice versa
How to couple tram cars together
In order to increase the system passenger capacity, trams can be coupled up together into a longer set.
- This can be done in the Railway depot
- Tram depot doesn’t currently allow this
- Tram railroad connection is required in order transport coupled trams onto tram tracks
Tram railroad connection is no longer required as current version of the game allows to link railway depot via tram road directly

Coupling trams summary

⚠️ It is now possible to connect tram depots with the tram street network directly
- While this feature was added as a part of the Early Start DLC updates, you don't need to own the DLC to use this feature
- Only depots build after the game update will allow transfer of trams directly to the street, depots build before the update won't have this feature

Trams accessing street network directly from the railway depot

Other notes
- It is possible to couple different tram types together
- There is a length limit (45m) for tram sets on roads
- Trams exceeding length limit will still be able to be used exclusively on railways

Game will show length of individual cars and the full set

Sets exceeding length of 45m will still be able to be used on regular railways

⚠️ Side note
- Trams reaching near the maximum length limit may already cause some traffic problems

43m long set greatly exceeding length of the station and may possibly cause traffic problems

Workshop “workaround”
There are some pre-coupled tram mods on the workshop
- Pre-coupled trams will be available for purchase in normal tram depots
- These pre-coupled trams cannot be split back into multiple “solo” trams
- Workshop mods required

Some pre-coupled trams from workshop, that can be purchased in regular tram depot

Pretty sure they can. Both tram end station and tram depot can be linked to the maintenance station.

Also, strange that we can form 45-meter trams, that are able to use tram roads, yet there is no vanilla tram stops for such trams.

Can Train depots be used to repair trams, if I have tramway connection to it?
Tigrovica  [author] 12 Dec, 2024 @ 3:57pm
Buses can basically use any stop that has road connection. Including the train platforms.

"[Tram Stations] Can be used by both trams and buses "

That's great to know! I was not aware of it.
I have tested right now, and trolleybus stops can also be used by buses.

"Trams reaching near the maximum length limit may already cause some traffic problems"

Doesn't seems to be the case anymore.
I have tested with a 44m tram set right now and it works fine. The tail doesn't blocks the main line. The game non-realistically pushes the tail into what would be the (un)baording line.

I mean it's logicall that they cant go to road
Tigrovica  [author] 20 Oct, 2024 @ 2:41am
Nope. Trains cannot pass to road. As well as trams that are longer than the game's limit 45m (as mentioned in the guide)

If trams can use rails then can tarina use tram rails?

What I recognized is that coupled trams will be decoupled when moved to a tram depot
Very nice comprehension!
