Very Much WIP

Say you want a stealthy, fast and maneuverable troop and vehicle transport, but want to constantly feel like you're on the brink of a horrific accident that results in your death and the deaths of the crew. There's a few different ways you can achieve this feat, but the Soviets by far took the cake in 1966 with the design of the first massive "Ekranoplan" ground effect vehicle.

This one dude, Rostislav Alexeyev, thought up this design of a huge half-boat-half-plane that flew optimally only mere feet of the surface of the water, taking advantage of what's called "ground effect," which allowed them to generate much more lift with their wings given the correct wing shape and layout. As it turns out, the optimal wing shape and layout looks goofy as hell and deserves to be built in this game.

The model who's gloriously handsome good looks grace your vision was named the Eaglet, after said devilishly sultry features.

This is the third functioning A-90 type ekranoplan to be built, designated S-26. The paint is based on these photos from it's last flight before being decommissioned in 1993:

RIP to the S-23 model, it didn't deserve to be blown up

How to fly:
  • Get on wing
  • Open door
  • Move towards cockpit, enter cockpit and turn on the lights (if you want)
  • Flip the two switches to the left of the throttle lever to turn on the engines (if you want)
  • Let them spool up, when they stop spooling up floor it and hold <s> if you're in some waves
  • Press <5> when in the air to exit PAR thrust mode (angle the flaps and nozzles for forward flight)
  • Voila

How to make it fly itself:
  • Sit in navigator's chair (the one with the two monitors)
The autopilot is where you'll spend most of your time, if not in the cabin messing around
  • The large keypad is where you input the coordinates of a waypoint you want to add
  • Press the <add> button to add that waypoint
  • For more than one waypoint, just input the new waypoint and hit <add> again
  • If you want to select between waypoints, use the <cycle wp> arrow buttons
  • If you add a new waypoint while selecting a waypoint in the middle of the path you want to fly, it will replace the next waypoint's coordinates with the coordinates you have inputted in the keypad
  • Flip the <path mode> switch to switch into path mode (makes the plane follow the path drawn out, conforming to the lines instead of blindly going to the next waypoint. Better for charting paths around islands or icebergs)
  • Press the <rem> button to remove the currently selected waypoint (the cI dial shows the number of the currently selected waypoint, aswell as the yellow highlight on the map)
  • Flip the <autopilot active> switch and set the altitude with the small keypad above the map (lowest I'd advise is 5m, 25-30m for bridges)
  • Voila

How to land:
  • Reduce thrust a bit
  • Press <6> to enter PAR thrust mode (flaps and angled nozzles)
  • Flip the HydroSkii© switch on the center console
  • Slowly lower thrust and drop closer to the surface, try to keep it level as you go. The reduced thrust will move it down for you
  • When the HydroSkii© skims the water, drop to idle and keep it perfectly level. When the HydroSkii© dips halfway below the surface, hold <s> until it the craft settles on the surface
  • Voila
I wouldn't suggest attempting to land on land without a 20m/s or more headwind

How to beach assault:
  • Taxi along the surface until you reach the coast
  • Flip the gear switch on the center console
  • Ease 'er onto the sand, don't use too much thrust as it will pull the nose too high and lose effectiveness of the front wheel steering (if you want you can press <5> again to reduce the rising action)
  • Control thrust to creep forward, too much speed may result in forceful unwanted contact between the hull and sand due to the sometimes sharp edges of the map (IRL they turn off the NK12MK prop on the tail from what I've seen)
  • When you're in an area you would like to assault, thrust to idle and flip off both engines (it's best to have more than one crew member for the next bit)
  • Press the guarded button at the foot of the ladder in the cockpit
  • In the cabin, press the ramp button once the nose is fully hinged open 90 degrees
  • Disconnect any rope fastenings to your own supplied vehicles and simply drive out the front
  • Voila

@Mr.Trains&Watch - Yes it is, check it up on the internet. They actually had a few ekranoplan variants back in the day. Even armed ones.

is this a real plane?
Kernle Frizzle  [author] 26 Jan, 2023 @ 12:12pm
in the real world yeah, theres no way any ekranoplan would be able to get off the ground otherwise
