Overview
This guide will give basic tips/advice on how to get a lot of the achievements in the game. If you need more help or want more in depth advice, I would recommend going to the official Discord server, which can be found at https://discord.gg/advr. Plenty of people are willing to answer questions about the game, and I find it is a rather friendly community.

Several of the achievements in Ancient Dungeon VR are obtainable by just casually playing the game and the player does not need to go out of their way to obtain them. I will mention these but not focus on them. A lot of other achievements are RNG based, so they may require several runs to complete or maybe attempting them if a run is looking good.

This guide will contain spoilers.
Casual Achievements
This section is listing all of the achievements that can be gotten while casually playing the game for a while and don't need the player to focus on them to get them. I added small notes to each of them for a bit more information that may be useful for some people.

  • Good Luck!: All you have to do is enter the dungeon.
  • Mind If We Pop In?: A challenge chest looks like a normal chest with a red trim. They can usually be found behind a locked door. These chests spawn enemies around them once you open them, and then spawn a relic once those enemies are defeated.
  • Errant Entrance: This achievement may require one of the early insight upgrades to get. Once you have that insight upgrade, look for cracks in the wall. The wall can be broken in this spot to reveal the secret room.
  • Deep Cut: This achievement can be obtained rather easily if you have a couple upgrades for the damage of your weapons and get a crit.
  • Surprise! Teeth!: Mimics start spawning in the infested dungeon, which is the second layer. I usually find them the most in this layer as well as the luminous mines, which is the fourth layer.
  • Attics Anonymous: May require the same insight upgrade as Mind If We Pop In?, though I have to fact check that. The ceiling will appear cracked and can be broken in this spot. I rarely actually find these myself and usually accidentally break them open with something that exploded.
  • Wanderlust: This will easily be obtained by just going through different runs.
  • UR2OP: I believe this achievement is obtained when you pick up three tier 3 relics. A list of these can be found on the wiki, link is https://ancient-dungeon-vr.fandom.com/wiki/Relics.
  • Aberration Obliteration: Aberrant enemies are more powerful versions of regular enemies. Once you beat the dungeon three times, you can enter hard mode modifiers to increase the number of aberrant enemies if you want to speed up progress towards this achievement.
  • Ceramic Panic: This achievement can take a while, but will eventually be gotten by just playing through a lot of runs.
  • Master of Unlocking: Same as Ceramic Panic, takes a while but will be obtained after going through a lot of runs.
  • Hale And Hearty: You usually start a run with three hearts, so to get this achievement you just need to pick up an upgrade like Charm of a First Love (The golden heart looking relic) a couple times, or Dowry Chest once, though this relic requires obtaining The Librarian achievement to unlock.
  • Big Spender: Shops usually spawn once per layer (assuming you haven't killed the shopkeeper, which makes them spawn less frequently), typically in the second half of the layer, at least in my experience.
  • Unerring Daring: I found this achievement easier to get using the throwing knife. A miss counts as hitting the ceiling, floor, or a wall with your ranged projectile (fact check for crossbow?). If you throw the knife and miss, but it returns to your hand before hitting a wall, ceiling, or floor, it won't count as a miss. This is why this achievement will probably be achieved pretty quickly in normal runs.
  • Itsy Bitsy: All you have to do to get this achievement is find a contracting orb and throw it at your feet. These orbs are pink colored and rather rare, so it is an achievement that requires good RNG to get. I'd recommend just keep and eye out for one during your runs and throw it at your feet when you find it.
  • Antique Antik: Sacrifice statues are stone statues with particle effects around them that give you a reward after you sacrifice something, either coins, keys, health, or health containers. Destroying them decreases your luck and sometimes drops an item/relic depending on the statue destroyed. These statues aren't too uncommon, so this achievement should be obtainable rather quickly.
  • Spoilsport: In order to get this achievement, you have to defeat a boss with a single strike. While this can take a bit to get, you will probably get it by just playing through the game normally or going through the new game+ runs, since you start to deal ridiculous damage in those runs. If you do go for it specifically, I'd just recommend prioritizing damage, probably Ivy Whip or something to boost melee damage by a lot and then increasing crit chance would be good, and then just go after the Rabid Bestiary or The Beast in it's third phase. I personally got this achievement on The Beast's third phase with a lucky crit the first time I beat it.
No Hit Achievements
This section is dedicated to covering the five achievements that are about no-hitting an area. For all of these achievements, I would recommend not focusing on them right away and going for other achievements first, since you can end up getting these if you had a good run on a layer going for another achievement or a casual run. This is how I ended up getting most of these achievements, though I hope some of the tips included in here can be useful for getting them or help for getting through a layer if you need it. Just going slower and taking your time in a layer can also be helpful for obtaining these achievements.

Boss Advice:
A safe way to take out most bosses in the game, with possible exceptions to The Beast, is to maintain a decent amount of distance from the boss, either by running around in circles or just hanging back from the boss a bit, and spam a ranged attack. This allows you more time to avoid the boss's attack and dodge projectiles. It may take a little more time to take out the boss, but it's a lot safer, which is helpful for these achievements.

The Gatekeeper
Most of the enemies in The Overgrown Gatehouse aren't too bad to deal with, and this achievement is the most likely to be obtained while just playing through the game normally. Things to look out for are arrow traps, which can be ducked under or blocked with a sword, and the small bats, which can sometimes get stuck behind a door and hit you in the back when you enter a room or just sneak up on you in general. The boss at the end of this layer is either King Slime or the Deranged Adventurer. King Slime spawns regular slimes whenever he is hit (sometimes gold slimes if you have the insight upgrade), and can be avoided by going around in circles in the boss room. The biggest threat is to avoid getting cornered by the horde of slimes after hitting King Slime a lot, and avoiding his charging attack. which happens when he stops moving and sort of scrunches up. The other boss that may spawn, Deranged Adventurer, is a little easier if you keep your distance, but has an attack where he jumps in the air and slams his stick into the ground, which causes some spikes to raise up from the ground in front of him (sort of in a \ | / pattern). There is a chandelier that can be knocked down with a ranged attack that will deal extra damage to a boss if you knock it down with a ranged attack, along with lighting them on fire, so make sure to try and hit it down on them.

The Delver
A lot of enemies in the Infested Dungeon explode on death and leave behind red particles that damage the player, which is something to be careful about. Exploding bulbs also spawn on the walls and are easy to accidentally get hit by if you're not paying attention. I would recommend taking this layer a bit slower and checking walls before you go into a room to avoid the exploding bulbs. On a plus side, Doom Shroom is the boss of this layer, and it is probably the easiest boss of the game if you run around the boss room in circles and spam ranged attacks. He has a charge attack, but as long as you are maintaining some distance it isn't bad to dodge.

The Librarian
A lot of enemies in the Forgotten Library use ranged attacks, but they are usually have a bit less HP. The books and wisps can all be oneshot, just be careful with the pink wisps, as they are an aberrant version of the regular wisp and explode when they die. The pink crystals and pink elemental things are oneshot if hit with a melee attack, though taking your time and picking them off one-by-one with ranged attacks is probably the best approach. You are able to duck under the pink lasers, which is very useful in this level. The pink slimes in this level are a pain, as they do a sort of teleporting attack. The best way to handle them is to move to the left and right to dodge their attacks, and pay attention to the way they are facing before they teleport, as that is the direction they will teleport. The aberrant version of the pink slimes is in my opinion the worst enemy, and I would recommend picking them off from a distance before they start coming after you. The boss in this layer is The Rabid Bestiary, and can be a little tricky as it spawns enemies every three times it is hit. Things to be careful of is trying to not let it teleport on top of you as well as the number 1 being spawned, as that spawns pink slimes. I remember this by remembering "one is the one we hate" during this boss fight. You can try to speed this fight up by hitting it with both the sword and throwing knife at the same time (or crossbow and knife), though this is a bit riskier if you are going for a no hit run of this layer.

The Miner
The Luminous Mines has a lot of enemies that are faster and more aggressive. Things to watch out for are large groups of enemies in rooms, the fast slimes with a white center that launch projectiles when they die, and the plants on the ceiling that shoot fast-moving white orbs at you. The easiest way to get this achievement would be moving slowly through this area, only taking on one or two enemies at a time. The boss of this area is the Elder Skeleton. It will launch red lines at you in sets of three, and also cause spikes to come out of the ground in a \ | / pattern. It also teleports and will cause spikes to come out of the ground in a - | - pattern when it does. The best way to beat this boss safely is to keep your distance and spam ranged attacks, and listen for where he ends up after it teleports so you can move quickly to avoid attacks coming from that direction.

The Caretaker
The Beast's Cradle is mainly focused on fighting The Beast, which is the boss in the area. I find the first phase the hardest to deal with when going for a no hit run, and keeping a bit of distance so you can see its attacks coming is probably the easiest way to safely beat this phase. When The Beast stops attacking and goes down in the pit area, make sure to avoid the red areas. For the second phase, I would recommend maintaining a bit of distance so you can dodge the attacks, though giving yourself enough room to move to the side when The Beast does the breath-like cone attack. The third phase is probably the easiest, just listen for where The Beast teleports and then hit it with your ranged and melee weapon when it charges at you. As for the transitions between phases, all the skulls in these areas are oneshot with melee attacks. For the first to second transition, dodge a bit more towards the left side. This will cause all the skulls to group up in the corner, which is helpful for keeping an eye on them or taking them all out with an explosion. For the rest of the area and the second to third transition, advance slowly and take the skulls out one-by-one.
Merchant Related Achievements
This section contains the achievements that are obtained by interacting with the merchant or things in the merchant shops. I do not include Crush Capitalism in here since it is in the hidden achievement section.

You have a Problem and Jackpot!
These achievements are about using the gambling box that sometimes appears in a merchant's shop. It takes five coins to use and gives you a random reward, which I believe is influenced by luck. I personally do not like how one of these achievements calls this box a "Bandit Box" and the other calls it the "Merchant's Slot Machine" because it isn't clear they refer to the same thing. I would recommend going for these achievements at the same time, since Jackpot! is RNG based and will probably require multiple attempts of trying the gambling box over and over, which will probably also lead to getting the You have a Problem achievement as well. I would recommend prioritizing relics that give luck or coins when going for these achievements. It will be obvious if you get the jackpot, since the word "jackpot" should appear on your screen and several stats (or all stats) are improved if I remember correctly.

Black Friday
There are several ways to increase your merchant discount. The easiest are relics such as customer card, though items that increase random stats will also sometimes improve your discount. Purchasing multiple items from a merchant's shop can also slightly improve your discount, I usually see improvements of 2% to 4% if I buy all the items in the shop, which can be helpful for getting over the 60% mark.

You Break It, You Buy It
The easiest way to decrease your merchant discount is going through the shop and breaking all of the boxes, pots, counters, and furniture items in the shop. Just like in real-life, this is slightly upsetting for a merchant. You can also kill the merchant to significantly decrease your discount (test for exact amount). I believe I got this achievement after breaking everything and killing the merchant in two different shops in a run. If you have hard mode unlocked, using difficulty modifiers to start at a -30% discount can make this achievement easier to unlock as well.

Merchant Shop Boycott
This achievement is obtained by not entering a merchant shop. This isn't too bad to get if you look around a level and grab relics that you find laying around, as well as getting relics after defeating bosses. Just don't make the same mistake I did and throw your knife at the merchant while sitting outside of the shop.
Food Related Achievements
This section contains the couple of achievements that deal with food in the game. The four different food items listed lowest quality to highest are potatoes (restore half a heart), apples (restore full heart), steak (restore two hearts), and dragonfruit (restore three hearts).

Feed The Friend
This achievement requires you to throw a dragonfruit into a pit. Dragonfruit are rather rare and can be difficult to find. I would recommend getting the golden pot insight upgrade, as golden pots occasionally drop dragonfruits, which can make this achievement a lot easier to get.

Overstuffed
This achievement is very RNG based, requiring you to eat all of the four different food types in a run. I would recommend getting the golden pot insight upgrade so dragonfruit can be found more easily, and then to only try and get this achievement once you find a dragonfruit early on. Once you find this dragonfruit, the main obstacle is a steak, since apples and potatoes are common. I'd recommend checking the merchant shops. This achievement can take several attempts after finding a dragonfruit depending on how lucky you are.

Empty Belly
Even though you can't eat food in a run in order to get this achievement, you can still get protection and more hearts to sort of recover health in a way, which can make it a lot easier to get this. I would recommend waiting a while to go for this achievement, as it can be gotten by just getting a good run normally while going for other achievements. I personally got it when I was going for something else and just had a good run where I got protection early on and never went through it all.

Dentist's Delight
Golden food is made when you throw a glittering orb at food items that are on the ground, and throwing it at your feet will also transform food items in your inventory to the golden variant as well. Golden food restores more health and gives coins when consumed. Glittering orbs are rather uncommon, so I would suggest keeping an eye out for one while going for other achievements or on casual runs and then using the orb once you do find it on a food item.
Enemy-Specific Achievements
I'm running out of good names to organize these sections, so here's the two achievements that require you to kill specific enemies and where to find those enemies.

Un-parry-leled
Possessed armors are found in The Forgotten Library, which is the third layer in the Ancient Dungeon. They are slow, but can only be damaged after parrying their sword attack. I would recommend killing any enemies around them so that the area is safer, then using your melee weapon to block their attack, and finally follow up by hitting them. Possessed armors can only be damaged by hitting them after blocking one of their attacks. Repeat until they die.

Shiney Slimey
Golden Slimes only spawn after the Shiney Slimey insight upgrade is purchased. They drop decent loot, ranging from keys, coins, or a relic, but they have a lot of health (50 hp), so keep that in mind.
Sealed Soul Achievements
Sealed soul runs are special runs that are unlocked once you collect all the journal pages of a specific person. Some of these runs only introduce small changes to the dungeon, and others have major changes and can be a bit difficult to beat. Weapon augmentations still work in sealed soul runs, though other achievements cannot be obtained in a sealed soul run.

Laid to Rest
This achievement requires you to beat three sealed soul delves. Three of the ones I personally found easier are The Berserker, Biologist, and Cartographer runs. (Some people may find others easier depending on the weapon they pick and playstyle).

Unsealed Souls
I don't want to give too many spoilers, so I won't go over each delve. I will say that some of them can take multiple attempts, and I wish you luck with the later ones. A plus side is by the time you get to this point in the game, you should be rather used to the enemies in the dungeon so the delves shouldn't be too bad.
Try Hard Achievements
The achievements in this section are dedicated to the try hard achievements, as well as a couple achievements I believe are a lot easier to obtain while going for the try hard achievements. You unlock the ability to go through new game + runs after beating The Beast two or three times. A new game+ run has you go through the dungeon again with all your current upgrades, but the dungeon becomes harder. I find the further you go into new game + runs, the more important damage and evasion get. I got the tryhard achievements by having a glass canon build that oneshot all the enemies and bosses, but would also be oneshot by anything.

Try Hard
To get this achievement, you have to beat a new game+ run. Enemies deal double damage, there are more aberrant enemies, items are less common, and enemies have more health. There are multiple approaches that can be taken to beat this, having a larger health pool is something that is handy, and I would recommend it if you aren't also going for the Try Hard With A Vengeance achievement in the same run.

Try Harder
To get this achievement, you have to beat a new game++ run, which requires beating new game+ and the normal delve. Enemies deal triple damage, have more health, more aberrant enemies, and less items/pickups. Having a large health pool can be helpful for this achievement, but the less food items spawning at this point make this strategy a bit harder to maintain. I would recommend prioritizing damage if you are going for this achievement and having some health so you don't get oneshot.

Try Hard With A Vengeance
At this point enemies oneshot you, there are more aberrant variants, enemies have more health, and there are less items. At this point health doesn't really matter too much, so I recommend prioritizing evasion so you can possibly survive if you get hit and/or prioritizing damage to oneshot everything. Food isn't important anymore, so having pit fiend to just throw it in a pit is nice. I found having a lot of damage and ranged homing attacks (Sharpened Eagle Talon relic) was nice, since I could throw it around a corner to check for enemies. Just be careful not to get oneshot by an arrow trap at this point, as this would be an unfortunate way to end a run like this.

Jingleheimer Schmidt and Deep Pockets
While these two achievements don't require you to do any new game+ runs, I included them here since it is really easy to get over 20 keys or 250 coins in new game+ runs, so it can be convenient to just get these achievements while going for the try hard achievements.
Hidden Achievements
This sections is focused on going over the hidden achievements in Steam.

Mosquito Bite
This achievement is obtained by beating The Beast for the first time. This will give you one beast blood, which is used for augmenting weapons with the hammer and anvil in the main area.

A Battle Won
This achievement is obtained by beating The Beast with the sword and throwing knife for the first time. I personally found this one easier to get than the A Contract Completed achievement, but I also played a lot more with the sword and knife so I am a lot more used to it.

A Contract Completed
This achievement is obtained by beating The Beast with the crossbow and dagger. I personally found it a bit easier to go through a couple times with the sword and throwing knife so I could then augment the crossbow bolt to return faster, but it definitely isn't necessary.

A Hard Battle Won
This achievement is obtained by beating The Beast in hard mode with the sword and throwing knife, which for the purposes of this achievement is hard modifiers that total up to a difficulty modifier of 1.75. These modifiers are unlocked after beating The Beast three times. The modifiers I would suggest are the following, though you may find other combinations of modifiers to be easier:
  • Bleeding (More aberrant enemies): +40%
  • Clumsy (Harder bosses): Off
  • Disoriented (Larger dungeon): +25%
  • Feeble (Enemies have more hp): +1 hp
  • Feverish (You start with less health): -0 hp
  • Odious (Less luck and discount): -30%
  • Perfumed (More enemies): +60%
  • Queasy (Limits what food items are in the dungeon): No change

A Hard Contract Complete
This achievement is obtained by beating The Beast in hard mode with the crossbow and dagger, and is similar to the A Hard Battle Won achievement, requiring a difficulty modifier of 1.75. I would recommend the same modifiers that are listed under the A Hard Battle Won achievement for this achievement as well.
Hard Mode Achievements
This section is focused on the two achievements, excluding the hidden achievements, that require hard mode modifiers to get. Hard mode modifiers can be unlocked by beating The Beast three times. I go over what modifiers I used to get these achievements, but these are just a suggestion and you may find other combinations of modifiers easier.

Model Explorer
For this achievement, I would recommend the following modifiers:
  • Bleeding (More aberrant enemies): +40%
  • Clumsy (Harder bosses): On
  • Disoriented (Larger dungeon): +100%
  • Feeble (Enemies have more hp): +3 hp
  • Feverish (You start with less health): -0 hp
  • Odious (Less luck and discount): -30%
  • Perfumed (More enemies): +60%
  • Queasy (Limits what food items are in the dungeon): No change

Model Adventurer
For this achievement, I would recommend the following modifiers:
  • Bleeding (More aberrant enemies): +40%
  • Clumsy (Harder bosses): On
  • Disoriented (Larger dungeon): +100%
  • Feeble (Enemies have more hp): +5 hp
  • Feverish (You start with less health): -2 hearts
  • Odious (Less luck and discount): -30%
  • Perfumed (More enemies): +60%
  • Queasy (Limits what food items are in the dungeon): Apples
Other Achievements I Wasn't Sure Where To Put
This section contains achievements that I wasn't sure how to group with the others.

Close The Book
This achievement requires you to discover all the items in the game. I would recommend going for this achievement last, and picking up new relics whenever you see them to slowly make progress towards this. Most other achievements also are required to be completed at this point since they unlock new relics to find in the dungeon. Once you only have a few left, going into ng+'s and trying to get a high discount, the overstock flyer, potluck ladle, and bat ear is probably the best way to go. (Credit to Celestial_itus and Grey Acumen for the suggestion on this).

Show Off
Although this achievement doesn't let you get any upgrade items, food and orbs are still usable. As long as you get decent food items from merchants or finding them, this achievement isn't too bad to get.

Quick Like A Bunny
First off, if you go into settings once you first boot up the game, you can enable a speedrun timer that will tell you how long it took to damage The Beast, which is fun to see and also useful for gauging how fast of a pace you want to set going through the dungeon. I would also recommend going to https://www.speedrun.com/ancient_dungeon?h=Any-Sword&x=zd3j1r82-onvv200n.8146wweq and watching a couple of speedruns for the game, as some of the things used in those runs can be useful if you want to get a fast run. The easiest way to beat the game quickly is to run past most enemies and find the boss room, though be more careful in The Luminous Mines since skeletons and the flying skulls can catch up to you. 20 minutes does give you a decent amount of leeway, so you are still able to go for challenge chests, merchants, and go out of your way a bit to grab upgrades and relics.

Risky Boss-ness
The best way, in my opinion, to go for this achievement is to bring yourself down to half a heart right before the boss room in either the Overgrown Gatehouse or Infested Dungeon and then beating the boss. These bosses aren't too difficult, and if you've gone against them a lot can be done without getting hit quite easily.

Hammer Time, Savage Soldier, and Merciless Killer
These achievements are obtained by using beast blood to augment your weapons using the hammer and anvil. Beast blood is obtained after beating The Beast, and you can obtain more by doing new game+ runs (though you don't get any if you die, so keep that in mind). You should be able to get all of these achievements by just playing through the game and beating it while going for other achievements.
Final Words
This is the first guide I've made on Steam, so if you have any feedback to improve the quality of the guide, either formatting/layout of things or by more helpful advice for some of the achievements in the game, feel free to let me know either on Steam or Discord (Lent#1348).

Interestingly, the Spoilsport achievement doesn't pop from one-shotting enemies with crossbow bolts

Thank you very much tho certain other achievements like taking no damage in any section does count separately for each player which is understandable ofc but that's what caused the confusion. Also gambling 20 times is also dependent on who gambles.

In multiplayer, every player needs to meet the requirements for those two achievements. In the case of empty bellied, no one would be able to eat food in order to satisfy the requirements

As for reviving, it does not count as eating food

For show off, lore relics (the lore pages) do not count towards grabbing a relic
maxwell_the_averagest 24 Jul @ 7:48am
2 questions would you be able to get the empty bellied achievement in multiplayer if only the second player eats food while you don't? if so does reviving count as eating food?

and for the show off achievement the same question if I do it in multiplayer and the second player is the only one to grab relics and does not pick up shared relics does that count? and if so do lore relics count towards grabbing a relic?

Just want to confirm: is there any achievements here that you cannot unlock in multiplayer?
Thomas o Kawaiiness 26 Dec, 2023 @ 12:56am
I got Unerring Daring without actually throwing the dagger. I just held down the trigger to hold the dagger out and swung it at enemies, and after hitting 25 of them it gave me the achievement (well, the achievement didn't pop until I closed the game, but the game gave it to me within itself) because I didn't know it was a throwing dagger at first, I just thought it was a smaller offhand blade. I'd recommend someone else test this to make sure it wasn't just me or something they fixed, but I think it'll just keep working that way.

Just finished the NG+++ run and since you can't eat food during that and I didn't get the achievement safe to say it is not reset! :D

Thanks for the reply.
Lent  [author] 23 Apr, 2023 @ 10:31pm
I would be pretty confident in saying the speedrun achievement wouldn't work if you're in a NG+ run, since I believe it's based off the in game timer. The timer shows the total time spent, so the original run and then however long the NG+ run was will be displayed.

As for not eating things and similar achievements, I would assume they do not work in a NG+ run. Looking in the code, the ability to unlock the achievement is set to false when you eat a food item for the empty belly achievement. There is a possibility it is reset in NG+, I'm not to certain in that regard, but I think it's unlikely.
Bibzuda 23 Apr, 2023 @ 11:52am
Do you know if you're able to get the speedrun achievement or not eating or things like that in a NG+ run?

Wow! What an awesome guide for players. This definitely took a lot of work to write, good job!
