Ensure you know the binding to your Steam Overlay. If it's disabled, enable it, as this will be a crucial step in getting controller to work. If you are unsure where to locate these settings

1. Locate the Steam option. On desktop, it is normally located in the upper left-hand corner of the Steam desktop application.

2. Click on the Steam option and then click "Settings"

3. Click on the "In-Game" tab, the third down from the top, then make sure "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game" option is checked

4. Select the "Overlay Shortcut Keys" option, then press a key/key combination that will be used to access the overlay. DO NOT USE F4 AS THIS KEY, AS IT WILL BE USED IN THE GAME AND MAY CAUSE ISSUES IF BOUND TO THIS KEY. Personally, I use "Shift+Key Pad *" as my shortcut, due to the extreme unlikelihood of pressing those keys together while playing a game accidentally. If you don't have a number pad, find a key that works for you.

Now that the Steam Overlay has be configured and enabled, plug in your controller of choice, then launch the game. The game should launch in windowed mode. Click "settings, then "keyboard" and make sure the keyboard controls are set to default. Then exit back to the game, and press "F4" to enable full-screen.

While the game is in full-screen mode, activate Steam Overlay with the keyboard input(s) you chose. Next, select "Controller Config". A diagram of your controller should pop up. Click the button you want to use for an action, then select the key associated with that action used by the keyboard controls. You may try to set the D-Pad input as the left analogue stick, as it will sometimes work. Mileage may vary.

EXPORT YOUR KEY BINDINGS FOR THE FUTURE, AND REMEMBER THAT PLAYER 2 WILL NEED TO USE A DIFFERENT CONFIGURATION FOR THE PLAYER 2 KEYS!!

You should be good! Just test if everything works. You can press "F4" to go back to the original resolution of the game, and the controller will still work.
