I've noticed forests have regrown into the single line cuts (I think it might be only if there's too little space between trees}
It's easy to just throw down a path after it's cut so that doesn't happen
Trees are placed in grid cells just like other sturctures. They are in random size / model to make them look natural. You can use Q and E to rotate the camera and see that they sit in lines
If you want to reach a glade fast, you can cut through the forest by a single unit width path. Usually there is only ~5 trees needed to cut to a glade.
Here's how to order treecutters: when giving cutting order, hold shift to make your brush at size 1, and paint a straight line along the grids
